Summary: The primary role of the school counselor is to provide support to students on issues related to sense of self, wellness, and guidance throughout their school experience. They will develop, execute and assess a counseling program which defines ways for students to experience a sense of belonging and support with social-emotional needs. This includes guidance lessons to support the classroom environment in each division.

Essential Responsibilities/Activities:

Develop and sustain an environment of belonging to the FI community through a whole-school counseling plan including the transition from Maternelle to Lower School and to Middle School.
Implement a counseling plan that supports students through their learning journey at FI from general classroom strategies to individual interventions. Drive a tiered approach to support students
Tier 1 - Universal support (all)
Tier 2 - Targeted prevention (some)
Tier 3 - Intensive, individualized prevention (few)
Collaborate with the Student Support team to define clear pathways to move forward with counseling interventions or student support interventions.
Diligently and confidentially assess student needs and inform all individuals that support the student (teacher, parents and division head when necessary).

Meeting organization and follow up
Provide data to families in order to make informed decisions for a student support plan or to request external support by specialists.
Support new families as they transition into FI and existing families with their learning journey.
Aid division heads in the development and implementation of school-wide policies and procedures regarding counseling, especially in areas related to:
Crisis response
Preventive measures and activities
Social interactions
Student development and learning
Liaise with the health coordinator or other health professionals when medical issues arise
Provide and/or organize professional development for teachers and families regarding counseling as needed, i.e. child abuse prevention and detection.
Recommend and implement the budget for counseling

Minimum Requirements: Advanced degree in a mental health related field or school counseling, three years experience working with children.

Preferred Qualifications: School counseling experience; ability to communicate in French; specialized knowledge of emotional crisis management.
