Busy Oncology multi-physician private practice with office locations throughout Oklahoma who provide in-office chemotherapy, immunotherapy and supportive care treatments for patients with cancer and hematological diagnoses.
The Physician's Assistant (PA-C) provides specialized care to patients with cancer within an oncology practice. This role involves comprehensive patient care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, and follow-up. The PA works collaboratively with the supervising medical doctor to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
The Physician's Assistant in an Oncology practice would perform the following services for our patients:
Conduct Physical Exams:
Perform thorough physical examinations on oncology patients to assess their overall health and specific cancer-related conditions.
Record vital signs, observe symptoms, and document findings in patient records.
Patient Histories:
Take detailed patient histories, focusing on cancer-related symptoms, treatments, and family history of cancer.
Update and maintain accurate and complete oncology-specific medical records.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Evaluate patients' symptoms and collaborate with oncologists to determine appropriate cancer diagnoses.
Develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans, including chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy.
Diagnostic Tests:
Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as CT scans, PET scans, MRIs, and biopsies.
Explain test results to patients and use findings to guide oncology-specific treatment plans.
Medication Management:
Prescribe and manage chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and other oncology-related medications.
Monitor patients' responses to treatments and adjust prescriptions as necessary to manage side effects and efficacy.
Preventive Care:
Provide cancer screening and preventive care education to high-risk patients.
Educate patients on lifestyle choices to reduce cancer risk and manage survivorship.
Team Coordination:
Work closely with oncologists, nurses, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive cancer care.
Specialist Consultations:
Refer patients to specialized oncology services and collaborate on multidisciplinary treatment plans.
Consult with supervising oncologists on complex or unusual cases for additional insights.
Record Keeping:
Ensure all patient interactions, treatments, and outcomes are accurately documented in oncology-specific records.
Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Regulatory Compliance:
Adhere to oncology-specific healthcare laws, regulations, and best practices to ensure quality care.
Participate in audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance oncology clinical practice.
Policy Development:
Assist in creating and updating oncology clinic or hospital policies and procedures.
Implement and follow protocols to enhance patient safety and care efficiency in oncology settings.
Patient Education:
Educate patients about their specific cancer diagnoses, treatment options, and prognosis.
Answer patient questions and provide clear, understandable information about oncology care.
Health Management:
Offer guidance on managing side effects of cancer treatments and improving quality of life.
Provide resources and referrals to support services such as nutritionists, physical therapists, and support groups.
Treatment Plans:
Explain the details of treatment plans and ensure patients understand their roles in managing their cancer care.
Monitor and support patients' adherence to treatment plans through follow-up visits and communication.
Professional Development:
Engage in continuing medical education (CME) to stay updated with advancements in oncology treatments and care.
Attend oncology-specific workshops, conferences, and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
Certifications:
Maintain certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Pursue additional oncology certifications or specializations as needed to expand expertise.
Qualifications:
Master's Degree:
Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program with a Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
Certification:
Pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) and obtain certification by the NCCPA.
Oncology Training:
Complete specialized training or residency in oncology through clinical rotations or fellowship programs.
State Licensure:
Hold a current and valid state license to practice as a Physician Assistant.
DEA Registration:
Obtain DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances if required by the practice.
Clinical Experience:
Gain experience through clinical rotations during PA program and previous employment in oncology settings.
Specializations:
Specialize in oncology, with experience in areas such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, or hematology.
Clinical Skills:
Demonstrate strong diagnostic and clinical skills specific to oncology to assess and treat cancer patients effectively.

Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills for patient interactions and documentation.
