Behavioral Health Provider

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Provider (BHP) is focused on improving the mental health and well-being of children

(ages 0-21) in our practice, through integrated behavioral health in the primary care setting.

The BHP partners with clinic providers to identify and intervene in mental needs of patients served in the primary care setting. The BHP focuses on prevention and early intervention for behavioral and mental health concerns during a primary care clinic visit. When these healthcare needs are identified, the BHP is available, during clinic visits, to provide brief assessment and schedule therapy appointments to develop targeted treatments plans to mitigate negative symptoms.

Short term behavioral health therapy (1-6 visits) may also be provided during which identification of next steps for the patients would be determined, that includes a community resource referral for further intervention or continued therapy treatments

Essential Functions

1. Consultation

a. Assists primary care providers in recognizing and treating mental health needs

b. Performs substance abuse screening/recommendations for referral

c. Performs Initial assessments and develops treatment plans for common mental health conditions

d. Provides psychoeducation/coping skills for patients and their caregivers

e. Evaluates and emphasizes medication adherence

f. Assess for learning disabilities (contingent upon scope of practice)

2. Care Coordination

a. Provides on-going follow-up with identified patients

b. Identifies, refers and advocates for patients needing more specialized care

c. Supports psychotropic medication management prescribed by PCP's

d. Maintains knowledge of community resources

i. Inpatient facilities

ii. Individual and family counseling

iii. Community Mental Health

3. Crisis Intervention & De-escalation

• Provides crisis intervention and de-escalation for situations impacting the safety of patients, family members and staff

4. Program Development

a. Provides ongoing behavioral health education for clinic providers/staff

b. Develops behavioral health policies and protocols to fit the clinic needs

c. Determines which behavioral health screening tools to use

d. Participate in quality improvement efforts related to behavioral health

Qualifications

• Experience in assessment and treatment of common mental health disorders (anxiety, depression, adhd, disruptive behavior, social concerns, medication adherence, insomnia, substance abuse, eating disorders, learning problems)

• Demonstrates flexibility to adapt to evolving care model in primary care and willingness to collaborate as clinic needs change

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• Ability to form and sustain effective relationships

• Maintains a working knowledge of differential diagnosis of common mental health or substance abuse disorders

Education

• Doctorate In clinical psychology, counseling psychology or behavioral health

• Master’s degree in social work, psychology, marriage & family therapy, licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) or licensed professional counselor (LPC)

Experience

• Prefer at least one year of experience working with behavioral health needs for children ages 1-4, 5-10, 11-14, 16-18,19-21

• Prefer at least one year of experience working with common pediatric mental health disorders listed above

• Prefer at least one year of working with electronic health record documentation

License

• Unrestricted license to practice in Kansas
