Under general supervision of the General Counsel of the Department of Human Services, receives, reviews, and routes all incoming complaints, motions, pleadings, stipulations, memoranda, subpoenas, and discovery requests to ensure all are handled timely and properly and placed in the appropriate electronic or physical case file. Assists Office of General Counsel in responding to FOIAs, subpoenas, and other requests for records. Review court orders to ensure deadlines and requirements are met and follow up when needed. Drafts correspondence and other documents for review by an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel. Ensures documents are properly filed by applying procedural rules and regulations. Performs additional related work as required.

Examples of Work

Maintains schedule of assigned attorney within the Office of General Counsel.
Receives all incoming documents on which legal action is required.
Drafts response letters to FOIAs, subpoenas, requests for records, and other legal documents.
Conducts research into state and federal law applicable to the work of the Department.
Receives, reviews, and redacts documents produced by the Department in response to FOIAs, subpoenas, and other requests for information/records to ensure completeness and confidentiality.
Ensures pleadings, orders, and/or evidence are placed in the appropriate case file.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the broad principles and application of law and the rules of civil procedure.
Ability to communicate accurately and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively with personnel in a legal setting.
Ability to maintain assigned caseload.
Ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and other products offered by Google.
Knowledge of online legal research tools such as Westlaw.
Ability to gather information and documents upon request of supervising attorneys.
Knowledge of pertinent statutory and regulatory provisions.
Ability to understand government organization and operation.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Successful completion of a Paralegal (Legal Assistant) Training Program.

Experience: Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid clerical experience as a Paralegal in a legal setting.

Substitution: Successful completion of college classes from a regionally accredited college,

university, or business school may be substituted through an established formula for the

experience on a year-for-year basis.

Other Information: Must be eligible for employment upon completion of fingerprint-based criminal background check.
