POSITION SUMMARY The Vice President of Mountain Operations will provide leadership, management, and strategic direction for all on-mountain activities and planning including Slope & Vehicle Maintenance, Snowmaking, Lift Operations, Lift Maintenance, Ski Patrol, Mountain Planning and Construction. The VP of Mountain Operations is a member of the Senior Leadership Team that directs the overall vision and direction for the company. This includes ensuring that all goals and objectives are met or exceeded in all areas of responsibility including operational, financial, employee engagement and safety, as well as guest satisfaction and safety-oriented goals. This individual will also be responsible for on-mountain construction such as the building of lifts, compliance with all governmental rules and regulations as they apply to the Mountain Operations Division, coordination with other members of the Senior Leadership Team and working with various Divisions within Alterra Mountain Company to assist in development of goals and implementation of programs.
Mountain Operations departments provide the services and infrastructure for skiing operations and work closely with other departments to provide summer activities on the mountain. Department services are split between providing excellent guest service in areas where mountain operations employees interact with our guests and maintaining the mountain's infrastructure for the resort. Safety and risk management are important aspects of all mountain operations activities and remain the primary focus in all mountain programs and procedures. Planning for future development is ongoing in effort to provide opportunities for business growth. Regulatory compliance as well as positive relations with the U.S. Forest Service also remains a primary focus in all mountain operations activities and planning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIESGeneral Responsibilities- In conjunction with President/COO, sets the goals of the Mountain Operations Division, establishes priorities, and ensures alignment with overall objectives of other SSRC divisions and Alterra Mountain Company
- This individual works with President/COO and the Senior Leadership Team to develop and update the five-year strategic plan for the Mountain Operations Division as well as the entire Resort. This includes establishing a system to monitor progress, and communicate the plan to all affected individuals inside and outside of the Mountain Operations Division, and insuring compliance with all other Divisions within SSRC and Alterra Mountain Company
- Develops and completes annual operating budgets, capital maintenance and expansion budgets; provides financial forecasts as appropriate.
- Reviews business plans on regular basis to include review of each business unit's achievement toward annual plan goals.
- Directly supervises the Project Manager in the development and modification of all mountain plans including master plan with the USFS.
- Provides leadership to the division and makes key decisions that affect levels of service, safety/risk management, employee engagement, cost containment, revenue production, and overall financial performance.
- Balance between running a cost effective, profitable operation; generating revenue; delivering a good employee experience; and delivering a quality, safe experience to our guests while also considering the planet and community impacts.
- Ensure Mountain Operations Division is following all areas of company and corporate policies and procedures including Finance, Human Resources and other divisions, and other regulatory include city, county, state and federal requirements.
- Serve as Designated Agent for the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board (CPTSB). Responsible for compliance with CPTSB Rules and Regulations and ANSI B77.1 and all communications with the CPTSB including formal responses following inspections, licensing and reportable incidents as required.
- Weekly communication with the President to provide a status report on all areas of responsibility. Immediate communication will be necessary from time to time as emergencies, sensitive issues, or issues of major importance arise.
- Active participation in the weekly Senior Leadership Team meeting and manager meetings.
- Active participation in bi-monthly Safety Committee meetings.
- Work with the President/COO and Senior Leadership Team to ensure effective, on-going communications with all appropriate governmental and regulatory agencies and industry related organizations. The emphasis is on clear and concise communication of current issues and future plans to ensure that there are no surprises to any of the parties involved.
- Member of Ski Patrol Management Negotiation Team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Must meet SSRC minimum driving standards and have current driver's license; a successful motor vehicle record background check is required.
- Must be able to operate a computer with strong skills in Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
- Must be able to communicate clearly in English, written and verbally.
- Ability to ski or snowboard at an advanced level.
- Must be able to walk/hike on uneven, challenging terrain.
- Work in inclement weather at various locations on the mountain. High exposure to cold, snow, wind, rain, extreme heights, etc.
- Ability to lift minimum 50 lbs.
- The ability to work with people, maintains positive relationships, and strives for excellence.
- Knowledge of equipment and machinery to establish maintenance and safety procedures and make smart buying decisions.
- General knowledge of the ski industry and what offerings are necessary to assure Steamboat remains competitive.
- Ability to problem-solve and interact in a highly effective manner and maintain positive relationships with guests and staff, including management, subordinates, and co-workers.
- Ability to be a consistent role model for company's Service Excellence standards.
- Select and motivate an industry leading management team.
- Articulate and strong communication skills with the ability to speak to large groups including employees, industry, community events or public meetings.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS- 7-10 years of experience in Mountain Operations with specific experience in the areas of lifts, slope maintenance, snowmaking, and patrol.
- 5+ years of experience supervising and managing multiple areas of responsibility.
- 5+ years of experience developing and maintaining budgets of multiple areas of responsibility.
- 5+ years of experience managing multiple capital construction and large maintenance projects.
- 3-5 years of experience developing strategic plans, standards, and accompanying monitoring systems.
- Performance record showing success in achieving goals and effectiveness in working with all levels of management and operating personnel.
- College degree with emphasis in electrical engineering or business administration preferred or ten to fifteen years' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMPENSATIONThe base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on a range of factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, location, merit system, quantity or quality of production, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term and long-term incentives.
Steamboat base salary range: $151,000 to $166,000 per year depending upon knowledge and experience.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, talk, see, hear, and operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
- Must be able to ski or snowboard and spend extended period of time outdoors all-weather conditions.
- This job is not particularly strenuous but must be able to perform all work performed by Mountain Operations personnel for short period of time.
