We are seeking a Senior Contamination Control Engineer to help us ensure that space flight hardware meets contamination requirements to enable mission success. As a member of our Space Environmental Effects Engineering group, you will join a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who work to ensure that APL’s spacecraft and space instruments survive in, operate through, and collect accurate scientific data of the space environments they encounter. We are passionate about our team's engineering contributions to space exploration in a collaborative and inclusive environment. As a Senior Contamination Control Engineer, you will contribute to a range of contamination engineering activities, including:
- Developing contamination requirements and contamination control plans
- Formulating contamination susceptibility analyses and contamination budgets and recommending mitigation strategies
- Conducting outgassing and material analysis
- Providing technical guidance to contamination and related processes including thermal vacuum test, precision cleaning, cleanliness verification, flight hardware handling, spacecraft integration and test, and spacecraft launch activities in order to meet mission goals
- Supporting verification of contamination requirements
QualificationsYou meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Bachelor of Science in Physics, Materials Engineering, or a related science/engineering field.
- Have at least 10 years of experience in Contamination Engineering for space flight programs, including mission formulation through launch readiness.
- Have experience in particulate and molecular sampling for analysis in accordance with industry standards such as IEST-STDCC1246E and are familiar with ISO-14644 cleanroom certifications standards.
- Have extensive domain knowledge of vacuum bakeout, outgassing testing, precision cleaning, and cleanliness verification processes on spaceflight hardware.
- Have experience with vacuum and pumping systems and associated measurement equipment, including Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) and Residual Gas Analyzer (RGA), as well as vacuum testing procedures such as MSFC-SPEC-1238, ASTM E595, and ASTM E1559.
- Willing to travel occassionally.
- Are able to obtain a TS/SCI+poly security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have at least a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Engineering, or a related science/engineering field.
- Have experience in performing contamination transport analysis and modeling for complex geometries.
