Summary
Up to $5,000 sign on bonus
Requires Two year commitment to Confluence Health and must be an external applicant.
Directly assist the surgeon during a surgical procedure and to provide staff support to the Surgery Department. Assists the department in providing service excellence and quality patient care by performing a variety of specialized and non-specialized tasks and skills. Is flexible in assisting others in surgical department as needed.
Position Reports To: Periop Service Director
Essential Functions
- Checks the surgery schedule for the day, noting procedures and planned anesthesia.
- Makes sure that all instruments and supplies are available for procedures scheduled. Discusses the cases planned with the physicians and circulating nurse to determine any additional needs. Is knowledgeable and prepared to do the surgical case that is scheduled.
- Opens sterile supplies for each procedure.
- Following a complete surgical scrub, prepares the sterile back table for the procedure. Drapes the back table and mayo stand and prepares instruments, supplies and basins.
- Prepares sterile field by arranging drapes, cautery and suction. Monitors sterile field at all times for break in technique.
- Hands instruments to the surgeon during the procedure. Reports damaged instruments to the lead CS person or to the circulating nurse.
- Cleans instruments as received back from the surgeon and keeps instruments readily at hand during the case.
- Keeps necessary sutures readily available throughout the case.
- Assists the surgeon with gowning and gloving before the start of the case.
- Cleans the operative field continually during the case to remove old sponges and suture ends.
- Observes the surgical procedure and anticipates the need for hemostatic clamps and sutures to control bleeding.
- Observes the progress of tissue dissection and anticipates the need for special retractors and sponges. Coordinates specimen identification and handling with the physician and circulating nurse as directed by the department policy and procedure.
- Continually works in a neat, organized, safe and efficient manner.
- Continually observes closely and anticipates any special problems and equipment or supply needs as the case progresses.
- Observes for any breaks in aseptic technique.
- Is constantly aware of any verbal or non-verbal instructions or signals from the surgeon indicating particular needs.
- Keeps track of all instruments, supplies, sponges, and sharps throughout the case.
- Holds cameras and retractors as needed.
- Completes a final instruments, sponge and sharps count with the circulating nurse at the conclusion of the case.
- Checks and updates the surgeons preference cards.
- Is flexible in working hours. Understands that overtime is common in the OR environment. Takes appointed call rotations.
- Is CPR certified.
- Understands the rigors of the job such as long hours, long cases, and long periods of sitting or standing.
- Works in the OR under the responsibility of the circulating RN. Outside the OR, under the direction of the OR RN, team leader or surgical supervisor.
- Takes active role as a specialty coordinator if assigned by that unit s supervisor. See specialty coordinator description.
- Adheres to all of the policies and procedures of the Wenatchee Valley Medical Center Surgical Department, as well as those that are pertinent to their department.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required:
- Surgical Tech training from an accredited surgical 1-2 years of previous surgical scrub tech experience.
- Surgical Tech certification.
- Washington State Surgical Tech Registration.
- CPR certification annually.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, aseptic technique, basic surgical technique re: procedures done in a surgical department, and of names, functioning and use of instruments, equipment and sutures used.
- Position requires the ability to relate effectively with co-workers, physicians and staff and function as part of a team.
- Possesses the ability to relate effectively to the patient, guests and the general public.
- Ability to work efficiently amid ongoing distractions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in the written form.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in the OR where space may be limited and confined. Requires a combination of working alone and also working closely with others. Hours may be irregular at times and some overtime may be involved. Requires working under stressful conditions. General supervision is provided by the Director of Surgical Services with additional instructions, guidance, and directions provided by the department supervisor or circulating RN.
