The Payroll Manager supervises and coordinates the day-to-day payroll operations ensuring that over 30,000 associates in nearly all states are paid timely and accurately, adherence to various federal, state & local laws as well as company policies & SOX Controls. What you will do – Essential Responsibilities
As a Payroll Manager, you will:
Oversee payroll processing activities while ensuring accounting accuracy, completeness, adherence to SOX Controls; manage resources appropriately to balance workload and ensure key performance metrics are met.
Drive team performance by managing the on-boarding & training process, setting clear expectations, and measuring results; participate in the performance management process, including performance reviews, team & individual development.
Identify training, education, and upskilling needs within the team; deploy as needed to ensure operational targets are maintained as well as accounting policies and procedures are followed appropriately.
Collaborate with the team and business partners to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
Analyze department metrics, including staff productivity and key performance metrics; recommend solutions to drive execution or improve performance.
Provide recommendations to Payroll Leadership and the Company to support continued compliance.
Conduct periodic reviews of pay rules.
Ensure adherence to payroll SOX controls and provide recommendation for changes to controls, driving for compliance, accuracy, and efficiency.
Lead and participate as a subject matter expert for payroll in projects that span multiple departments and/or the company as new initiatives are deployed to meet business goals.
Assist the Senior Manager and/or Director with staff communications, issue resolution, goal setting, and maintaining fiduciary duties and accounting standards.

Must be able to sit onsite, as requested, at CarMax’s Home Office in Richmond, Virginia
Internal Candidates: Successful completion of Entry MAP or MDP required.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance preferred, or equivalent experience required
5+ years of multi-state payroll environment, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Internal Controls, Accounting Compliance, or equivalent experience required.
2+ years of experience leading teams to achieve common goals, including managing the work of direct and/or indirect reports highly preferred.
Strong accounting skills including general knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Strong understanding of Payroll and Payroll Tax laws, regulations, and processes highly preferred
Project management experience preferred.
Experience and knowledge in Cloud-based ERP solutions, Workday, robotics, OCR technologies, and various automations desirable
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook) required.
