Description:
Responsible for collaborating with all members of the Medical Management Team to develop, implement, and manage abortion health care services. The Abortion (AB) Services Clinical Lead works in conjunction with physicians, clinicians, registered nurses, operations team members, and other ancillary staff to ensure that high quality abortion care is delivered in a customer service driven environment. They also collaborate with the various departments of PPMW to accomplish mission-driven goals for the affiliate.
Requirements:
1. Patient Care (if a clinician)
- Practices independently as a clinician with a high level of proficiency, providing evidence-based, comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare.
- Provides patient care in medical and procedural abortion programs, including provision of medication abortions, performance of procedural abortions (as competency allows), and participation in ultrasound services.
- Maintains productivity expectations and compliance standards of the agency.
- Functions as "back up" for licensed staff as appropriate.
- Complies with all safety and emergency policies and procedures.
- Works independently to maintain up-to-date knowledge in the healthcare field via attending seminars and workshops and reading relevant material.
2. Serves as the supervisor and manager for PPMW nursing staff working in abortion
services.
- Participates in the hiring of nursing team members and coordinates the orientation and training program for these professionals.
- Manages scheduling of nursing staff, including approving time-off requests, schedule changes, and time-sheet sign-offs.
- Provides clinical support and leadership by teaching, coaching, and consulting on clinical/case management issues for clinicians, physicians, nursing, and ancillary staff during health center hours and at meetings.
- Maintains clinical competency for all required nursing team responsibilities.
- Provides clinical training related to the provision of abortion care and other sexual and reproductive health care services, as well as non-clinical trainings, as requested by the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operations Officer.
- Responsible for the annual clinical observation and performance evaluation of nursing staff as part of the annual performance review process.
3. Assists with health center flow through problem-solving and workflow solutions.
4. Monitors medical aspects of services offered at the health center, acting as a resource to center staff and patients regarding medical concerns.
5. Ensures compliance with PPMW medical protocols and procedures by both licensed and non-licensed staff.
6. Monitors processes to ensure all state and other regulatory agencies procedures, policies and regulations are met. Agencies include but are not limited to OSHA, CLIA, DEA, and FDA.
7. Assists with the development and review of all abortion-related clinical emergency protocols and coordinates practice drills with staff members.
8. Maintains status as a certified CPR instructor and trains/certifies PPMW staff members.
9. Collaborates with members of the Medical Management Team to develop internal processes to support the expansion of abortion services offered by PPMW. Creates associated education materials and workflows. Trains health center staff in preparation for implementation. Provides support and follow up training after implementation to ensure proficiency and accuracy.
10. Actively participates in all clinical quality, compliance, and risks management efforts of abortion services, including performance and review of routine service audits.
11. Assists with managing the 24 hour on-call system including scheduling the on-call shifts for clinicians and RNs and working directly with the after-hours call service to address concerns. Assist with maintaining the After-Hours Call Log to ensure appropriate documentation and follow up. Performs regular call audits. Shares responsibility for providing backup coverage for after-hours call.
12. Serve as the designated Program Director for the following service areas:
- Sedation (both minimal and moderate)
13. In conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer and Associate Vice President of Clinical Services, revises abortion service-related PPMW MS&Gs with each update, helps develop training materials, and trains clinicians and staff on MS&G updates.
- Ensures standardization among clinical procedures within and between the health centers as per the PPMW Medical Standards and Guidelines (MS&G)
- Develops new workflows as new clinical services are added or as clinical service modifications are made
14. Assists Chief Medical Officer with coordination of research activities.
15. Collaborates with other PPMW departments on initiatives and activities when requested, as appropriate.
16. Participates in volunteer training and community education as assigned the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operations Officer
17. Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operations
Officer.
Essential Functions for those Clinicians who perform specialized
procedures/services:
Specialized Procedure Requirements:
- Must meet requirements for Clinicians performing IUC insertion and removal, implant insertion and removal, medication abortion, ultrasounds, and colposcopies (preferred) as outlined in the PPMW Medical Protocols.
- Must be granted clinical privileges by the PPMW Chief Medical Officer with a copy kept in the personnel file.
- Must follow protocols for performing IUC insertion and removal, implant insertion and removal, medication abortion, ultrasounds, and colposcopies as outlined in the PPMW Medical Protocols.
- Must be available to perform IUC insertion and removal, implant insertion and removal, mediation abortion, and ultrasounds at all PPMW sites, as needed and determined by the Chief Medical Officer.

Qualifications:
- Requires education commensurate with state statute licensure requirements for practice capacity (Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife vs Registered Nurse) as well as current license as a clinician or nurse in Maryland, Washington D.C and Virginia
- Must have current DEA licenses required for practice in PPMW service areas; must have prescriptive authority with current licensure. (If a clinician)
- Two (2) to four (4) years' experience in sexual and reproductive health, ob/gyn, surgical setting or abortion services required.
- Current CPR certification and BLS required.
- Ultrasound skills and Medication AB training must be accomplished within 3 months of hire with ongoing demonstration of competency.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population.
- Possess an understanding of PPMW's business and mission and willing to travel to other clinic sites.
- Ability to set and manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Must be highly organized and extremely detail-oriented.
- Excellent computer, interpersonal, and listening skills.
- Competency with EMR systems and ability to communicate system errors.
- Must be able to work independently and cooperatively with team members.
