Primary Functions and Accountabilities:
The Police Support Officer will provide administrative support within the Police Department and ensure department equipment maintenance and safety. This position is to be an entry level position in which the person is exposed to a hands-on training environment for a career in the Police Department including Police Officer or Communications Officer within three years of hire. Works alongside both commissioned police officers and non-commissioned police personnel and observes the daily operations of the City’s patrol, investigative and administrative divisions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provides administrative support, information, and direction to employees and the public regarding the police department. Responds appropriately to inquiries regarding but not limited to police reports and equipment maintenance.
- Responsible for running administrative errands for the department that include but are not limited to picking up and delivering supplies or materials to other City facilities, other law enforcement facilities, or locations which are deemed necessary by the police department.
- Responsible for maintaining the police department equipment and ensuring equipment is stored and working properly.
- Assists in the coordination of incoming and outgoing mail for the department.
- Participates in hands on law enforcement activities including but not limited to self-defense classes with trained defensive tactics instructors, firearms training, municipal court proceedings and patrol ride-alongs.
- Participates in community outreach initiatives and programs sponsored or facilitated by the police department.
- Assists the Animal Control Officers with daily duties, including but not limited to animal control ordinance violations and removing dead and injured animals.
- Assists the Property Clerk with processing and storing evidence, storage inventory and control of department supplies.
- Acts as a backup to Records Staff for fingerprinting City residents or those who work in the City of Leawood, when they require background checks.
- Assists the City’s Safety Committee with maintaining the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the Justice Center.
Minimum Education, Training and Certifications Requirements:
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an interest in a career in a Public Safety position within the Police Department.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.

The City of Leawood offers career development opportunities in which the employee could increase their experience, training, and pay. The position is eligible to receive merit-based pay increases every year (merit increase up to 5% increase). Employees also receive a Time In Service Bonus every three years of employment on their anniversary date equal to 5% of their annual salary.
Starting Rate of Pay: $22.27 - $23.38 / hour, DOQ
(This is a non-exempt benefits eligible position.)
