The EmPATH Nurse
Duties:
- Assists with crisis interventions and medical emergencies, obtains vital signs each shift or more frequently as indicated.
- Administers intramuscular injections.
- RN is responsible for completing RN intake/assessments on all clients admitted during their shift, obtaining urine drug screens, BAL and pregnancy tests on admissions, obtaining admission orders, dispensing routine and PRN medications, taking orders from prescriber and updating MAR, completing electronic and paper charting in a timely manner and participating in treatment team meetings.
JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
- EMPATH will provide non-hospital facility-based services that render short-term treatment to facilitate access to services and stabilization to prevent ED and acute psychiatric hospitalization admissions.
- EMPATH will provide these services to individuals who present to the program or are transferred from area EDs.
- Initial admission will be on a voluntary status to adults (18 years and older) who are presenting with a mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders that are experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONNMEMT
- This position requires the RN to provide direct medical care to clients, during 12-hour shifts.
- This position is required to provide nursing covering on a 12-hour shifts despite any weather conditions or holidays that arise.
- Required to be certified in and adequately implement verbal and physical de-escalation techniques that include a wide range of bodily movements including but not limited to grasping, holding another person, and ability to go down on knees, running, and walking.
- Daily Staff Duties:
- a. Performs the initial admission nursing assessment and completes required admission paperwork including nursing assessment, nursing note and nursing admission orders.
- b. Update medication tabs.
- c. Update allergy lists.
- d. Complete paper MAR.
- e. Obtain urine drug screen, BAL and pregnancy tests upon admission.
- f. Follows all established protocols and guidelines for admission prior to admitting the client to the unit.
- g. Makes the determination of the appropriate admission protocols needed for each client (ex.-agitation protocol, diabetic protocol, HTN protocol).
- h. Obtains admission orders from the prescriber on duty.
- i. Completes charting for each client during every shift prior to the end of shift.
- j. Completes discharge paperwork and discusses medication and aftercare instructions with client and/or family. Provides copy of paperwork for clients.
- k. Counts narcotics and documents at every shift change. Notify supervisor immediately of any discrepancies.
- l. Obtains and charts vital signs on every shift.
- m. Monitor for significant changes in client's condition/behavior every shift and make referrals to obtain new orders as needed.
- n. Administer scheduled, routine, and PRN medication in a timely manner.
- o. Obtains blood sugars as ordered.
- p. Triages potential referrals with Mobile Crisis if necessary.
- q. Complete C-SSRS on each client
- r. Attend to guest and/or client needs during medical emergencies (i.e.: seizures, falls, etc.)
- s. Coordinate with Emergency Departments and EMS if necessary.
- t. Obtain Prior Authorizations
- u. Weekly medication counts of routine medications.
- v. Update Admission/Discharge log each time a client is admitted and discharged from unit.
Team Building:
- a. Must be punctual and maintain a good attendance record.
- b. Participates in daily treatment team meetings.
- c. Participate in shift reports.
- d. Coordinate transitions with other staff.
- e. Maintains a positive and professional working relationship with all staff members and supervisors.
- f. Communicates and approaches conflict in a problem-solving manner with staff and supervisors.
- g. Accepts additional assignments and/or changes in assignments to meet the needs of EMPATH Services.
- h. Promotes an environment in which cultural diversity and customs, values and beliefs of individuals are respected.
COMPENSATION:
- Starting salary for this position is approximately $29.97/hr based on relevant experience and education.
Schedule:
- Schedule requires 12 hours shifts, rotating weekends, and scheduled holidays.
- Regular attendance is an essential job function.
- Mandatory to remain awake and alert during shift.
- Must give six hours' notice if not able to work their scheduled shift (unless a documented emergency arises).

- Computer experience is required. Must be familiar with basic Microsoft Office skills and EMR.
QUALIFICATIONS - EmPATH Nurse
Education:
- RN or LPN with current Tennessee license and experience in psychiatric nursing preferred.
- BSN or ANA certification as Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse preferred.
Experience / Knowledge:
- Should have sound knowledge of psychiatric medications, diagnoses, treatment modalities and interventions.
- Experience in psychiatric nursing preferred.
- Experience in working with special populations including individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness and Co-Occurring Disorders preferred.
- Experience working in a crisis setting preferred.
Physical:
- Schedule requires 12 hours shifts.
- Mandatory to remain awake and alert during entire shift.
- Minimal exposure to biological hazards.
- Frequent exposure to unpleasant odors.
- Hearing of normal/soft tones and close eye work.
- Walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. Pushing/pulling up to 250 lbs.
- CPR and First Aid certification required (training provided).
- Required to be certified in and adequately implement verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Applicants should be able to exercise sound judgement under pressure.
