Job Duties
The VA Department of Transporation is seeking a highly motivated Highway Maintenance Operator for the Fairfield Area Headquarters. Responsibilities consist of performing a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and
procedures.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT
policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Ability to perform safe/skilled operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Safety shoes required.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment
repairs

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore,
advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATORS:
NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
