Manager, Underwriting (must have workers' compensation underwriting and management experience)| 100% Remote -working central or eastern time zone M-F 8am-5pm (6am-3pm PDT)
General Summary:
This position is a leadership role that will lead a team of workers' compensationunderwriters and manage an underwriting book of business. This team is responsible for the profitable production and retention of assigned book of business to include customer satisfaction with agents, clients and internal departments. Working with our underwriting partners the manager will be responsible for oversight of the underwriting processes relative to production and profitability while maintaining renewal retentions consistent with the established goals and strategies of the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct and monitor the workers' compensation underwriting processes in support of the unique distribution strategies for their respective teams.
- Monitor staffing levels and make recommendations as needed.
- Develop and monitor profitability, account retention and new business production goals in line with overall business objectives.
- Manage team members levels of authority and referral processes.
- Participate in organizational projects as needed.
- Perform departmental file audits in accordance with the company procedures and guidance.
- Lead and/or coach team to:
- write and retain a profitable book of business through solid risk analysis, pricing with adherence to state filings, corporate guidelines, and delegated authority.
- compile and document underwriting decisions and make referrals when appropriate including rational and recommendations.
- maintain strong product line and industry expertise and while gathering/sharing competitive information along with changes/trends in the local and national markets.
- collaborate with Sales Team to develop and maintain strong agency relationships with shared accountability in meeting territory goals. Keep leadership, peers and sales team informed of all issues and meaningful activities.
- contribute to tactical and strategic business planning with Sales and distribution partners.
- provide thorough and pertinent information and guidance to Underwriting Services staff required to process coverage requests in accordance with service guidelines and standards/SLA’s
- provide professional, timely and courteous communication and service to internal and external customers to resolve issues.

Job Requirements:
- 5 years’ experience in workers' compensation underwriting.
- Property and Casualty Producer license required in home state, or successfully pass exam within 2 months of hire date
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent industry specific experience.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead, and train underwriters
- Demonstrated experience in working directly with policy holders, sales, agents, and brokers regarding workers' compensation.
- Ability to read, interpret, and develop business reports regarding workers' compensation.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Goal oriented and independent self-starter able to work with minimal supervision and meet commitments/deadlines. Acts with a customer-first mindset and a sense of urgency
- Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, telephone, and virtual meeting
- Excellent negotiation skills.
- Must be able to travel, including overnight travel throughout assigned territory.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Product Suite, including Excel
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed above.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- This is an office job that operates remotely but is similar to an office environment; this role potentially and will routinely use office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and web conferencing technology as examples.
- This is largely a sedentary role; however, some mobility is required
- May work early, late, or occasional weekend hours to accommodate business needs
- Occasional lifting of a maximum of 30lbs.
