The Human Resources Generalist position will support and lead a broad scope of HR processes, procedures, and policies ensuring that NLI is positioned as an employer of choice in the maritime industry. This position will partner and support the HRBPs/CHRO with all aspects of employee relations to ensure NLI attracts, retains, and builds a robust pipeline of internal and external talent for the organization. The incumbent is knowledgeable, supports and leads initiatives pertaining to training, development, engagement, compensation, and performance management.
Employee Relations
- Plan and execute special events for NLI such as service anniversary dinner, family day, company holiday parties, career fairs, and other events as needed.
- Maintain employee files in ADP, compliance records, audits, and other HR administrative tasks as assigned.
- Coordinate and help maintain compliance with all applicable state and federal employment laws such as FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, COBRA, etc.
- Serve as backup to payroll administration and processing.
- Responsible for maintaining and keeping our employee handbook current and review yearly or as required.
- Leads and runs quarterly MVR reports for all applicable positions.
- Ensure accuracy of data in HRIS system and ensure that all information is entered timely.
Talent Acquisition and Sourcing
- Lead full cycle recruiting for all NLI BU’s; includes all exempt and non-exempt positions.
- Lead bi-weekly staffing calls, reporting and providing status updates on open positions. Discuss escalation process and make recommendations for sourcing.
- Uses passive recruitment techniques to find talent using many platforms, networking, and other activities.
- Trains and coaches hiring managers on industry best practices, techniques, and legal interviewing processes.
- Partner with HRBPs to understand talent development gaps in the organization and identify high potential talent internally for succession planning.
- Work with HRBPs to develop job descriptions and job candidate profiles. Review external benchmarking for talent and market skills, abilities, and requirements for open roles.
- Ensure that we have consistency with the use of interview questions, interview guides, and interview processes.
- Use a broad and diverse sourcing pipeline to ensure we attract diverse talent.
- Maintaining effective relationships with social and professional networks to source qualified candidates.
- Lead the early career talent strategy related to internship programs. This includes attending career fairs, networking and building strategic partnerships with universities and other technical schools.
- Work with external recruiters, agencies, and outside vendors when appropriate.
- Promote NLI serving as a primary advocate for the company and industry expert.
- Co-Lead all full cycle recruiting responsibilities including sourcing, interviewing, debriefing, dispositioning candidates, and serving as the primary point of contact for all candidates.
- Ensure that all candidates receive a high-quality experience with NLI.
- Ensure that pre-employment activities are completed such as verifying references, background check, drug testing (when applicable), MVR reports are completed, and other pre-hire administrative responsibilities prior to hire date.
- Lead and manage the ADP applicant tracking system ensuring the proper disposition of all candidates.
- Ensure that all pre-employment administrative processes are completed prior to new hires starting with NLI.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or other comparable discipline; or equivalent
- Minimum of five (3+) years prior recruiting experience in a corporate and or Maritime environment
- Certification in PHR, SHPR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP is highly preferred.
- Effective oral and written communication skills to communicate credibly and effectively with stakeholders at all levels throughout the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under conditions of multiple deadlines and changing priorities to produce a large volume of material with attention to detail.
- Maintaining confidentiality is always required.
- Strong computer ability to use and knowledge that includes Excel, Word, Outlook. Knowledge of Microsoft applications and human resource specific software programs is highly preferred (ADP). Knowledge of staffing systems and tools; applicant databases, tracking system is preferred. Experience using ADP is highly preferred.

Working Conditions
General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal – with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books or packages of up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear and speak clearly using phone/headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view and enter information into the computer
