Southwest Shipyard owns and operates four (4) shipyards in South Texas with direct deep-water access to the Gulf of Mexico. Classification: Hourly / Non-Exempt
Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities are to perform structural fitting functions with following objectives:
- Perform structural fitter assignments as assigned.
- Work safe and maintain a safe working environment.
- Notify foreman or supervisor of any safety and/or structural issues as warranted.
Duties:
- Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lays out, positions, aligns and fits together fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications and direction from Foreman/Supervisor.
- Required to move parts into position, manually, by hoist or crane, and align parts, using jacks, etc.
- May be required to remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and/or cutting torch, as well as give directions to the welder to build up low spots or short pieces.
- May, at times, be required to tack weld, as necessary.
- Consults with foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems, sequence of operations, and time required to complete repair and/or installation
- Attend safety meetings as required
- Maintain a safe working environment
- Other duties as assigned
Education, Experience and Training:
- Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred, but not required)
- Be able to perform simple paper work as required for filling out forms and logs.
Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Mandatory drug testing prior to employment, and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests during employment.
- Must be able to communicate and take directions from Foreman & Supervisor.
- Must have good judgment skills, and a high-level work initiative;
- Must be able to work independently, without direct supervision;
- Must be able to meet strict attendance requirements
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
- Barge chemical environment. Requires prolonged kneeling, standing, walking, twisting, climbing, and the ability to lift and carry in access of 120 lbs, assisted.
- Ability to work in varied conditions (i.e.: heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, etc.), inside and outside.
- Able to work in confined space, heights and operate equipment efficiently and safely.
