The Sr. Component Engineer is responsible for consumable plastic component design and improvement. The engineer will own the transition of components into manufacturing and work closely with other engineering teams for qualifications, failure investigations and continuous improvement projects. We believe in growing technical skills with learning and application to relevant problems.
This position is part of the Component and Tooling Engineering Department and will be located in on-site in Sunnyvale, CA. At Cepheid, our vision is to be the leading provider of seamlessly connected diagnostic solutions.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Enhance existing consumables parts production, with an emphasis on refining part specifications, improving manufacturability, and maintaining integral product quality and performance.
- Use CAD modeling, prototyping, molding simulation CAE data, and hands-on lab testing to develop and enhance part attributes, mold concepts, and mold design details.
- Proactively identify risks in the design of parts, molds, and methods associated with consumables manufacturing and design quality into the component design rather than relying on inspection to detect non-compliance with design or process intent.
- Establish working relationships with vendors for outsourcing of engineering services, materials supply, injection molding tool design, and contract manufacturing of consumables components.
- Design, test, and validate new consumable designs in collaboration with multi-disciplined engineering teams.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Bachelor’s degree in field with 5+ years of related work experience OR Master’s degree in field with 3+ years of related work experience OR Doctoral degree in field with 0-2 years of related work experience.
- Requires in-depth knowledge of plastics and injection molding
- Experience with consumable design and material selection
- Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS and Geometric Design & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Root cause analysis and leading failure investigations, familiarity with statistics and Design of Experiments, and experience with metrology methods and fixture design
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Simulation software such as ANSYS and Moldflow
- Statistics and statistical software such as Minitab

The salary range is $103,000 - $145,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
This job is eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
