Position Summary - As an integral member of the Nursing Leadership team, the RN Wound Ostomy Specialist acts as a resource person, consultant, educator and facilitator by collaborating with the entire Health Care Team for the prevention of pressure ulcers, providing expert consultative services related to ostomy care and other wound or skin integrity problems.
- The RN Wound Ostomy Specialist also provides clinical, educational and emotional support as appropriate to patients of all ages and their families related to ostomy care and skin integrity prevention and problems.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following: Acts as a resource person, consultant and facilitator on issues related to pressure ulcer prevention, ostomy care, complex wound care, and skin integrity issues, including clinical evaluation, assessment and recommendations to assure high quality care in collaboration with: Nursing Department Medical Staff Care Management Pharmacy Home care agencies Interdepartment s Patients, families and community Provides educational programs and resource materials as required/requested on issues related to pressure ulcer prevention/treatment/management, ostomy care, complex wound care and skin integrity issues to: Nursing Department Orientees/Students from Affiliated Schools Interdepartment Medical Staff Patients, families and community Prepares and provides statistical data related to areas of responsibility as requested (to internal departments and external agencies). Executes ostomy and complex wound care to patients, including but not limited to negative pressure wound systems, intra operative and postoperative care, and preoperative ostomy site marking. Leads hospital-wide initiatives to reduce pressure injuries, including patient assessment and recommendations, education to hospital staff and patients/families, facilitating appropriate off-loading equipment, and evaluation of data to support program focus. Participates in direct patient care in the outpatient Wound Care Center as requested. Participates in activities and programs that promote the implementation of goals for the Clinical Resources, Ed. & Staff Development and Nursing Departments. Serves as Chairperson of the Pressure Ulcer Committee. Participates in ongoing Performance Improvement activities and initiatives as requested/ required. Enhances level of knowledge related to role as clinical resource and clinical expert. Serves as a clinical and educational resource with regard to problem solving through problem identification, action plan development and implementation and evaluation of outcome. Reviews and/or analyzes product lines or programs in areas of responsibility. Promotes efficient and cost effective use of equipment/resources related to areas of responsibility. Promotes a positive image of the hospital, Clinical Resources Department and the profession of Nursing to the Health Care Team, patients and the community. Portrays a professional image through appropriate dress and demeanor. Serves as a role model for staff. Communicates effectively with all members of the health Care team. Carries out other duties according to the needs of the Clinical Resources, Education & Staff Development Department and the Department of Nursing. Contributes to the development of standards of practice for the Nursing, Clinical Resources Department and areas of responsibility. Attends meetings and participates in committees, task forces, projects, etc. as requested/required. Submits all other work reports timely as required/requested by the Department Manager and/or Division Administrator. Attends mandatory hospital in-service programs. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements - Licensed and currently registered as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing Or Baccalaureate Degree in a related field with knowledge and skills normally associated with a BSN
- Minimum 3 years relevant clinical experience with demonstrated clinical expertise
- One year teaching experience with adult learners preferred
- WOCN preferred, WCC required
- BLS required

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment - May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Position requires ability to move about freely at least 85 per cent of the time.
- Must be able to remain stationary for extended/prolonged periods
- Frequently moves/transports objects up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to move patients of all weights with a minimum of one (1) assist or assistive device/equipment
- Must be able to work in environment with continuous interruptions
- Must be able to assess and respond to rapidly changing situational needs of patients, department and hospital
- Must be able to adapt in a high stress and fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions
- Must be able to detect sounds and respond to emergency sounds/signals at all times

- Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruptions and attend to tasks for more than sixty (60) minutes at a time.
