VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has an exciting opportunity available in its Preliminary Engineering Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Land Surveyor Supervisor vacancy. This position will directly supervise field personnel and CADD technicians in the Fredericksburg District office. The candidate will be responsible for reviewing work of survey staff to ensure that survey principles are correctly applied, calculations are accurate, and work is compliant with VDOT policies and procedures and in accordance with current APELSCIDLA rules and regulations. Additionally, the candidate would resolve complex office and field surveying problems using a variety of tools and applications. They will be responsible for scheduling work and providing oversight to the field and office staff to keep projects on time and on budget utilizing methods such as the Department’s current flight data, GPS, scanning, leveling and other conventional location methods. The candidate will process data collected by field crews and create drawings to build accurate maps, charts, Microstation and ORD drawings that can be utilized by internal and external engineering disciplines. They will conduct professional land surveying services including location, construction, right of way, utility, and condemnation surveys for a wide range of transportation projects in support of VDOT construction and maintenance programs. The candidate will be responsible for reviewing, approving, signing, and sealing survey work (responsible charge) under LS licensure and perform additional duties as assigned.
Required skills for job & position:
• Ability to provide daily supervision to work crews following all applicable policies, procedures and processes in a field or office environment
• Skill in the use of field surveying equipment, computers, CADD, GPS, and the processing of survey data
• Knowledge of professional land surveying principles and practices, APELSCIDLA Board rules and regulations, and VDOT policies and procedures related to surveying
• Ability to read and interpret plans, deeds, plats, road and bridge standards, and property records
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry, and trigonometry • Ability to review consultant survey data provided to the department
• Skill in providing exemplary customer service
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects with emphasis on project principles of scope, time, quality, and budget
• Ability to implement appropriate project management practices to support budget compliance and project deadlines
• Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices to include performance management and discipline
Minimum Qualifications
• Land Surveyor's license
• Valid driver's license
• Skill in the use of field surveying equipment, computers, CADD, GPS, and the processing of survey data
• Ability to read and interpret plans, deeds, plats, road and bridge standards, and property records
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects with emphasis on project principles of scope, time, quality and budget
• Knowledge of materials test methods and procedures
• Skill in preparing samples and performing laboratory tests
Additional Considerations
• Ability to implement appropriate project management practices to support budget compliance and project deadlines
• A combination of training, experience, or education in civil engineering, land surveying or related field desired
• Ability to review consultant survey data provided to VDOT
