Position Description: Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a diverse and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. At NRAO we are seeking a full time Systems Administrator within the Scientific Information Services division. Under general supervision, this position will support access to, and updates of production services based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform to support current telescope operations, and the design and development of advanced new systems for upcoming next generation instruments. While there will be a focus on computing support for EVLA and VLBA telescope and science operations, the Science Information Services division supports both these and ALMA and GBT science operations equally.
The preferred location for the position will be at the Domenici Science Operations Center (DSOC) located in Socorro, New Mexico. Other duty stations and/or a domestic partial tele-work arrangement might also be possible.
What You Will be Doing:
- Installation and Maintenance of key Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, workstations, and services, including maintenance of kickstart infrastructure and repository subscriptions.
- Support for Science, Engineering, and Software Development staff and visitors.
- Maintenance of science-facing applications and servers, including web and container based systems.
- Development and maintenance of programmatic and declarative automation.
- Addition to and maintenance of extensive library of documentation, both user facing and system oriented.
- Performing and/or assisting with hardware and software installation.
- Investigates, deploys, and/or assists in the deployment of new technology software, and systems upgrades.
- Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment Work is mission driven, team oriented and typically performed in an office setting within a research or development environment. Additionally, occasional travel may be required, e.g., visits to other Observatory sites, or conferences. Who You Are:
- You have a bachelors degree in computer science or a related field, or combination of education and experience.
- You have four years of systems administration experience with networks and systems comparable to those of the Observatory.
Competency Summary
- Strong knowledge of Linux system administration, data management and general IT processes and best practices.
- Linux installation, scripting (Bash, Perl, and/or Python preferred),
- Experience withsystem performance measurement and tuning, High Performance/Throughput systems, and parallel file system storage
- Familiarity with "Infrastructure as Code", including declarative automation such as Ansible.
- Attention to detail is critical; excellent documentation, communication, and collaborative skills are required.
- Highly organized

- An interest or background in Astronomy is helpful but not required.
