Research Autopsy Center:
The Research Autopsy Center at Stanford obtains unique organs and tissues postmortem for immediate release to researchers in cancer and systemic disease, as well as to create a program biobank. Participating patients agree to donate organs and tissues upon their passing and samples are taken at autopsy after death. The RACS currently collaborates with over 50 research groups in cancer and other diseases and supplied tissues are used for growth of cell lines and organoids, genetic sequencing, and numerous other types of research investigation. Our program provides a unique service to donors and supports ground breaking research, providing opportunities for career advancement in its reach and flexibility.

The focus of our lab is to understand Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative dementias at the single-cell level. We apply innovative technologies such as single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics and proteomics to postmortem human brain tissue and mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease to understand the contributions of individual cell types to disease pathogenesis. The LSRP-2's duties will be split between the Research Autopsy Collaboration and Dr. Cobos laboratory. For research autopsies, the LSRP 2 will assist with specimens at research autopsies during the day as well as on nights and weekends. They will be responsible for sample organization and processing, and tracking and annotation of biobank specimens. They will participate in study development using data and tissue obtained at autopsy including both publications and presentations at national meetings.
In the Cobos lab, the LSRP 2 will be responsible for designing, performing, and analyzing experiments under the guidance of the PI or a senior research scientist.
Duties include:
- Independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
- Independently conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project.
- Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist, and make modifications to existing procedures and protocols.
- Develop new research protocols where appropriate protocols are not described in the literature or where modification or adaptation of standard procedures and protocols is required.
- Support lab research projects, including single-cell transcriptome profiling of human brain tissue from patients with neurodegenerative disorders and mouse models of dementia.
- Independently conduct experiments, including histological analysis of human and mouse brain tissue (e.g., multiplex immunohistochemistry, mRNA in situ hybridization), and spatial transcriptomics and proteomics. Acquire and analyze microscopy images, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
- Analyze and interpret experiment results, and suggest modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researchers.
- Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.
- Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section, and to publication of findings. Present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences.
- Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
- Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as a technical resource for other research staff.
- Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.

Education & Experience (Required):

- Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.

Physical Requirements*:
- Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
- Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
- Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.

The expected pay range for this position is $71,000 to $88,000 per annum.
