- EMPATH will provide non-hospital facility-based services that render short-term treatment to facilitate access to services and stabilization to prevent ED and acute psychiatric hospitalization admissions.
- EMPATH will provide these services to individuals who present to the program or are transferred from area EDs.
- Initial admission will be on a voluntary status to adults (18 years and older) who are presenting with a mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders that are experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
- Under supervision of the EMPATH RN Coordinator and in collaboration with other team members, provide direct and indirect client care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, professional standards of care, state regulations and accreditation standards and Helen Ross McNabb philosophy, policies, and procedures.
- Maintaining accurate, complete health care records and reports in electronic medical records and paper charting for client including but not limited to nurse admission note, complete nurse notes each shift including objective findings, vital signs, and CSSRS, nurse notes every 2-4 hours and PRN during shift, and nurse discharge note.
- Reviews medical record for pertinent previous and current information.
- Provide routine nursing care for clients.
- Obtains client vital signs, including pulse, blood pressure, temperature, respiration, oxygen saturation, breath alcohol level, urine drug screen and additionally on female client's pregnancy test.
- Enters proper identification on client arm bracelet and places on client's wrist.
- Provide wound care when indicated.
- Follow medical protocols.
- Restores and promotes client's health by completing the nursing process.
- Collaborates with all EMPATH team members.
- Provide physical and psychological support to clients.
- Identified client care requirements by establishing personal rapport with clients.
- Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and support to clients.
- Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against client care and regulatory standards.
- Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Protects clients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; medication administration and storage procedures; and controlled substance regulations.
- Maintain continuity among team members by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Maintain client confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
- Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; calling for repairs; and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Maintain nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level and communicating need of supplies to RN Coordinator.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by completing Relias modules by due date as well as participating in elective modules.
- Implement, verbal and physical de-escalation techniques that include a wide range of bodily movements including but not limited to, grasping, holding another person, getting down on knees, running, and walking. Must be capable of assisting in utilizing non-violent methods of crisis intervention including therapeutic holding. Physical de-escalation techniques will only be implemented at Helen Ross McNabb Center facilities, and not in community settings.
- Communicates any barriers to covering scheduled shifts with on-call or RN Coordinator as soon as possible or no later than 2 hours prior to the scheduled shift in order to arrange shift coverage
- Enters work time in Datis at the beginning of each shift and at the end of each shift accurately, discusses any errors or issues with Coordinator within 1 business day
- Must be punctual and maintain an excellent attendance record.
- Participate in supervision with supervisory via emails, written, face-to-face, or telephone dependent upon situation. Attends and voices concerns/asks questions during supervision or as needed by email.
- Accepts additional assignments and/or changes in assignments to meet the needs of EMPATH as assigned.
- Mandatory to remain awake and alert during shift to monitor client safety.
- Demonstrates professionalism by restricting/limiting personal business during work shifts.
- Maintains adequate inventory of paperwork, medical supplies at the beginning and end of each shift as well as PRN.
- Prepares observation rooms between each client contact.
- Participates in the orientation and training of new personnel.
LPN qualifications/skills:
- Graduate of accredited school of licensed practical nursing and hold current license in Tennessee.
- Excellent knowledge of medical terminology.

COMPENSATION:
- Starting salary for this position is approximately $22.32 /hr based on relevant experience and education.
Schedule:
- Schedule requires 12 hours shifts, rotating weekends, and scheduled holidays.
- Regular attendance is an essential job function.
- Mandatory to remain awake and alert during shift.
- Must give six hours' notice if not able to work their scheduled shift (unless a documented emergency arises).
- Must be able to have excellent attendance and start the workday at assigned time.
- Must be able to work required 12-hour shifts.

Equipment/Technology:
- Basic computer skills are required for email, timekeeping, and documentation in the electronic medical record.
QUALIFICATIONS - EmPATH LPN
Education:
- Current LPN license in Tennessee.
- Computer experience in a health care setting required.
- Knowledge of psychiatric/mental health, A&D, and co-occurring disorders preferred.
- CPR certified or willing to become certified.
Experience / Knowledge:
- Should have sound knowledge of psychiatric medications, diagnoses, treatment modalities and interventions.
- Experience in working with special populations including individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, co-occurring disorders, and dual diagnosis disorders in crisis setting preferred.
- Ability to use computer and electronic medical record.
- Experience working in a crisis setting preferred.
- Must have excellent computer skills (including Windows, electronic medical record, and email) and the ability to learn new software products quickly.
Physical:
- Must be able to have excellent attendance and start the workday at assigned time.
- Must be able to work required 12-hour shifts.
- Frequent exposure to unpleasant odors.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. Pushing/pulling up to 250 lbs.
- Exposure to biological hazards.
- Hearing of normal/soft tones and close eye work.
- Valid driver's license.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.
- CPR and First Aid certification required (training provided).
- Required to be certified in and adequately implement verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Applicants should be able to exercise sound judgement under pressure.
- Clinical staff may be required to get an F endorsement to transport clients as necessary.
