Raytheon’s Flight Sciences department, within Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) is seeking a Senior Flight Controls Engineer to perform in the role of Lower-Stage Autopilot Lead onsite in Tucson, AZ. This position will provide expertise in flight control system design, integration support, and performance assessment for a hypersonic Strategic Missile Defense program. In this role, you will develop solutions to complex control problems and contribute to uncovering and resolving uncommon issues related to the development and implementation of unique flight controls systems. This position is onsite and works in a closed environment but enjoys a 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off) and a highly collaborative team environment.
What You Will Do
- The Lower-Stage Autopilot Lead will apply knowledge of advanced controls & inertial sensors to flight controls design & analysis of missile performance in simulation, ground test, and flight test for the lower stages of a missile interceptor.
- You will provide guidance and oversight for the flight controls function on program efforts, from the planning phase through program execution.
- You will develop flight control system architectures and requirements, implement control laws and design flight controls algorithms to maximize program performance and robustness.
- You will develop missile state estimation algorithms, as well as derive algorithms and filters to compensate for flexible body, aeroservoelastic effects, and inertial coupling
- You will interface with the upper-stage autopilot lead and team to ensure overall system performance metrics are met
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of flight controls engineering experience.
- Experience with endo-atmospheric flight controls
- Experience with embedded software development, hardware/software integration, and/or validation testing of flight control software on flight hardware
- Experience with C/C++, Matlab and Simulink
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer
- Research and/or applied experience in advanced control design techniques in areas such as nonlinear, robust, optimal, adaptive, fault-tolerant, and real-time control
- Air vehicle autopilot design experience over a wide range of aerodynamic regimes such as subsonic, transonic, supersonic, hypersonic, and non-continuum flows
- Performance analysis by simulation, including verification and validation techniques
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with other engineering disciplines and experience working within a GNC-focused development team
- Master’s or PhD Degree in a STEM field

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.
The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
