POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using or modifying the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs. Teachers are responsible for pertinent paperwork, case management responsibilities, and the facilitation of IEP meetings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Special education teachers help to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student.
Plans, develops, writes, and implements curriculum and educational programs in accordance with educational/treatment goals and students' abilities.
Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
Interacts with and participates in consultations with specialists as appropriate in order to plan and prepare each child's individualized educational program in accordance with goals.
Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
Guides the learning process toward the achievement of state standards.
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Prepares appropriate documentation and reports on programs and on student progress.
Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
May coordinate and lead the work of others.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
Arizona Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement or certificate preferred.
Will accept Teacher Academy or Alternative Certification options.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in special education preferred.
Will accept Teacher Academy or Alternative Certification options.
