Overview
The Dredge Tugboat Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a dredge tugboat, supporting dredging operations to ensure navigable waterways. This role involves overseeing the crew, navigating the vessel, and ensuring compliance with maritime laws and safety regulations.
Essential Functions (This is not all-inclusive)
- Navigate and operate the dredge tugboat to support dredging activities
- Ensure the safe movement of the vessel in various weather conditions
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of the vessel’s equipment and systems
- Supervise and lead the crew, ensuring adherence to safety protocols
- Train crew members on operational procedures and emergency protocols
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to crew members
- Maintain compliance with all maritime laws and regulations
- Ensure the vessel meets all safety standards and is equipped with necessary safety gear
- Conduct safety drills and ensure the crew is prepared for emergencies
- Coordinate with dredge operators to facilitate efficient dredging operations
- Assist in the positioning and anchoring of dredging equipment
- Communicate with port authorities, other vessels, and shore personnel
- Maintain accurate logs and records of vessel operations, maintenance, and incidents
- Prepare and submit reports on vessel activities and performance
- Ensure all required documentation is up to date and complies with regulatory standards
- Upholds the Company’s commitment to an injury-free workplace; leads and models safe work practices
- Follows all safety rules and regulations as well as all company policies and procedures
- Works safely around machinery; observes and instructs others in proper equipment use; uses/wears all required PPE
- Ensures team members are provided a safe work environment and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in maritime operations, with at least 2 years as a tugboat captain.
- Experience with dredging operations is highly desirable
- Valid Master of Towing, 100 ton, Inland/Near Coastal
- First Aid and CPR certification – Current
- USCG Physical and Drug Test
- STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) certification
- Radar Endorsement
- Strong leadership and crew management skills
- Proficient in navigation and vessel handling
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and extended hours as required
- Physical ability to perform tasks that involve bending, lifting, and climbing
- Availability for on-call duties, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically strenuous activities
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position as outlined in the Functional Job Description
- Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment screening (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing
- Must be authorized to work in the US, this position is not eligible for VISA sponsorship.
