Nursery Manager for our Elberta, AL nursery. In this role you will navigate the intricate world of seedling production with finesse, overseeing both bare root and containerized stock types. Leading a dynamic team, you'll steer the course of nursery operations and financial matters. Your role will involve meticulous coordination with external vendors, ensuring the seamless production, lifting, and shipping of our valuable seedlings. Working hand in hand with Resource Units, Genetics Manager, and Regeneration Manager, you'll strategically allocate seedlings, optimize site productivity, and target outplant survival rate of over 90%.

How you will succeed: Prioritize safety: Ensure that safety protocols are strictly adhered to, conducting regular safety training sessions and providing necessary equipment for safe operations. Constantly monitor and update safety procedures to meet OSHA-VPP standards, fostering a culture of safety among all employees and contractors.
Pursue operational excellence: Strive for perfection in every aspect of seedling production, from planting to shipping. Implement efficient processes and quality control measures to consistently deliver high-quality seedlings that set industry standards, meeting and exceeding customer expectations.
Master equipment operation: Be proficient in operating all nursery equipment, from tractors to sprayers, and share this expertise with colleagues through comprehensive training programs. Ensure equipment is well-maintained to prevent downtime and facilitate smooth operations.
Collaborate closely : Forge a strong partnership with the Regeneration Manager to align efforts and resources towards achieving regeneration targets. Communicate effectively, share insights, and work together to overcome challenges and capitalize on opportunities.
Manage contracts and sales: Take ownership of seedling grow contracts, purchases, and sales, negotiating terms that benefit the nursery while meeting customer needs. Maintain accurate records and stay abreast of market trends to make informed decisions.
Coordinate distribution: Efficiently manage seedling distribution and allocation to forest locations, ensuring timely delivery and optimal utilization of resources. Foster communication and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to streamline the process.
Budget responsibly: Exercise fiscal prudence in managing the nursery budget, meticulously tracking expenditures and ensuring compliance with company policies. Make informed financial decisions that balance operational needs with long-term sustainability.
Maintain records diligently: Utilize the Safety App to maintain accurate records of safety incidents and equipment checks, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Train employees on proper record-keeping practices to uphold organizational standards.
Conduct studies rigorously: Install, monitor, and maintain nursery studies with precision and attention to detail, both in-house and in collaboration with cooperatives. Gather and analyze data systematically to derive meaningful insights and inform decision-making.
Ensure equipment reliability : Prioritize regular servicing and maintenance of all equipment to keep it in optimal condition for safe and efficient operation. Proactively identify and address potential issues to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
Stay informed and engaged: Attend Nursery Cooperative Meetings and forestry-related conferences to stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies. Share knowledge and insights gained with colleagues to foster continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications - AS degree in Forestry.
- Certified Pesticide Applicator for Alabama or willing to attain within six months.
- 10 years of experience in bare root and containerized southern pine seedling nursery management and operation, maintain and repairing seedling nursery equipment.
- Understands the importance of safe working habits and continuously looking for ways to improve safety and efficiency.
- Excellent knowledge of soil fertility and tree physiology.
- Skilled in the operation of equipment such as tractors, sprayers, spreaders, lift trucks, seedling lifter, and other miscellaneous equipment.
- Excellent understanding of nursery pest identification and management.
- Proficient in the use of fertilizers and application rates necessary to grow quality seedlings
- Budget experience.
- Proficient with MS Excel, MS Office and MS PowerPoint.
- Great communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain and build excellent culture and team environment.
