SUMMARY
The Laboratory Student Extern will be under direct supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist II, a Lead Tech or Supervisor and performs laboratory tests as assigned.
While under direct supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist II, Lead Tech or Supervisor, the Laboratory Student Extern processes and performs laboratory testing in sections where successful completion of clinical rotation has occurred; reviews and reports lab results, and performs operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education
Required: Currently enrolled in a NCCLS-accredited Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Technician program and have completed all pre-clinical, core medical laboratory sciences.
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Must meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA '88) requirement for testing personnel in a high complexity testing laboratory

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Ability to speak, read, and write fluent English
- Ability to learn and integrate technical aspects of the laboratory as a whole
- Ability to make quick and accurate decisions under stress and emergency situations
- Ability to use computers (i.e. Microsoft Office, LIS systems)
- Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to work in areas that are confined and/or crowded
