Job Duties
VDOTs Materials Division is seeking a hourly engineering technician to identify, prepare and test/evaluate samples of construction materials to determine their quality and structural integrity. Other duties include: determining appropriate test procedures for material evaluation; conducting standardized and specialized tests on highway materials; reviewing test results; making decisions regarding compliance of materials to specification; preparing written reports with recommended action; visiting project sites as assigned to investigate materials failures; interpreting material acceptance and engineering guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to perform manual labor (securing, handling, and preparing materials samples).
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Ability to obtain required materials certifications within 12 months of employment.
• Ability to perform mathematical computations and prepare simple test reports.
• Ability to work in the area of low-level ionizing radiation.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
• Ability to develop and maintain project documentation for transportation related projects.
• Skill in the use of computers, software applications to include MS Office, and smart phones.
• Ability to analyze data and to draw logical conclusions based on analysis.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to observe and record test data.
• Knowledge of state and federal guidelines and regulations as related to transportation.
• Knowledge of mathematics up to and including algebra and geometry.
• Valid driver's license.
Additional Considerations
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Construction, or related
field desired.
• Materials testing certifications.
• Experience reflecting knowledge in highway materials testing, inspection, or construction.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
