Responsibilities:
Serves as a scrub technician for a wide array of surgical procedures, ranging from basic to more complex Orthopedic, Spine and Podiatry procedures
Anticipates the surgeon's needs by: passing instruments, sutures, and medications; assists by: holding retractors, providing exposure, suctioning, and sponging surgical wounds; and applies dressings, all while functioning under the direct supervision of the surgeon
Prepares the operating room by assembling packs, supplies, and equipment for surgical cases
Assures an adequate amount of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation are available to accommodate the day's case load and the surgeon's preferences
Prior to its use, inspects equipment/instrumentation to confirm it is in working order, and adheres to departmental procedures to remove and report any item that is found to be faulty or broken
Follows departmental policies regarding surgical counts of sponges, needles, and instrumentation on the sterile field
Assures a correct surgical count prior to the closure of body cavities and the surgical wound
Has the ability to predict and adjust supplies and instrumentation needed on the sterile field when unanticipated events occur during a procedure
Properly identifies and labels patient specimens according to departmental policies
Monitors aseptic techniques of surgical team members at the field; maintains a controlled sterile environment; and reports and corrects any breaks in sterile technique immediately
Assists the surgical team with patient positioning; and assists with transporting patients between departments or discharging patients from the facility
Assists with cleaning and disinfecting the operating room between surgeries, as well as terminally cleaning at the end of the day
Has the ability to act quickly and safely in the event of an emergency
Exhibits specialized knowledge, skill, and abilities in the fundamentals of surgical technology
Has the ability to clean, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instrumentation according to ANSI, AAMI, and APIC standards
Skills:
- Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology
- Proficient in infection control practices and maintaining a sterile environment
- Ability to work in an acute care or critical care setting
- Familiarity with basic life support techniques
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
Qualifications
-Graduate of a nationally accredited Surgical Technology Program (CAAHEP)
-Holds a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or will obtain prior to start date
