Are you graduating in Spring 2025 from nursing school and looking and looking to launch your nursing career? Our Graduate Nurse Rotational Program may be the perfect fit! You will rotate through various units within the hospital's medicine service line to gain valuable experience while working alongside an experienced nurse to help mentor and guide you in your learning.
About UPMC Shadyside:
UPMC Shadyside's Medicine Division provides new nurses with the foundations to develop and be a part of the future of care. Nurses who work in these units are developed and trained to maintain collaborative relationships with physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.
- 3 Pavilion, Internal Medicine: A medical telemetry/internal medicine teaching unit with 24 beds. This highly trained, team-oriented unit primarily cares for medical, cardiac monitored patients, and stroke patients. All nurses are telemetry trained and NIH stroke scale certified. This is a teaching unit with a dynamic learning environment, where you will gain experience with chest tubes, feeding tubes, trachs, and monitors. 3 Pavilion has a fast pace of work and a diverse patient population.
- 3 East, Family Practice: A family practice and teaching unit with 23 beds. The patient population on 3 East is comprised of all ages that are being treated for a wide array of conditions and are in need of compassionate and expert nursing care. 3 East offers a fertile learning environment with exposure to diverse patient care opportunities.
- 4 East, Internal Medicine: An internal medicine and teaching unit with 24 beds. 4 East was the first med/surg unit in PA to have received the ANCC Silver Beacon Award for Excellence. In this unit, you will see a high number of cystic fibrosis and peritoneal dialysis patients, in addition to patients with pulmonary conditions such as COPD and pneumonia. 4 East strives to create a uniquely caring and healing environment, with a staff that is very supportive of each other.
- 4 Pavilion/South, Medical Cardiology & Internal Medicine: An Internal Medicine and Medical/Interventional Cardiology unit with 35 beds. The patients on this unit are typically admitted for a wide variety of medical conditions with a concentration on cardiac management and procedures such as PTCA, pacemaker insertion, or AICD insertion. The unit culture is team-oriented with a supportive staff, a great place for both experienced nurses as well as graduate nurses.
- 5 Pavilion, Medical Telemetry/Cardiology: An 18-bed medical telemetry and cardiology unit. 5 Pavilion is a highly trained, team-oriented unit primarily caring for medical, cardiac monitored patients, and stroke patients. All nurses are telemetry trained. This is a teaching unit with a dynamic learning environment, where you will gain experience with chest tubes, feeding tubes, trachs, and monitors. The culture of the unit strongly promotes collaborating with physicians, residents, interns, and multidisciplinary team members and creates an atmosphere conducive to learning. Professional development initiatives and leadership support empower nurses to become active and respected participants within the interprofessional team that provides evidence-based, compassionate care to our patients.
What is the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program (GNRP)?
UPMC Shadyside is pleased to announce we are NOW HIRING Graduate Nurses as full-time Professional Staff Nurses to support our medicine service line as part of a special Rotational Program. The GNRP will begin in August 2025. Previous participants have had the opportunity to rotate through various units including 3 East, 3 Pavilion, 4 East, 4 Pavilion, and 5 Pavilion for 12 months.

What Does Placement Look Like Post-GNRP?
Upon completion of the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, placements are determined by participant preference, Hiring Manager preference, and business need through a collaborative matching process at UPMC Shadyside.
Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.
Shift/Hours: Our RNs work rotating 12-hour schedules to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.
GNs must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role -OR- must have a Temporary Practice Permit and commit to taking the NCLEX examination within SIX months of hire.
- BSN Preferred
- Graduate Nurses with an Associate's Degree or MSN will be considered if not having BSN
- Completion of UPMC Student Nurse Internship Program or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide care and interact with all ages of patients.
- Understand the principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
- Assess data on patients statuses to identify each patient s specific care needs.
- Establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients and their families, executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, and other departments.
- Work productively and effectively in an environment with changing priorities that require specialized skills.
- Think critically to analyze and problem-solve to deliver the best patient care.
- Use sound clinical judgment, think critically, and problem-solve to deliver quality patient care when it matters most.
- Understand, apply, and champion nursing best practices.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse required prior to program start date OR must have a Temporary Practice Permit and commit to taking the NCLEX examination within SIX months of hire.
- CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
- Act 34 Criminal Clearance
- Basic Life Support
