VDOT’s Fredericksburg District is seeking to fill a Maintenance Operator for our sign crew vacancy. We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate power tools and light to heavy equipment. Install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s). Perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.
As a sign operator, you will:
•install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices
•assist in tracking sign inventory and maintaining records
•respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
•attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
•demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
•complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
NOTE: This position requires approved safety shoes. Preference will be given to current CDL carriers.
Minimum Qualifications
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor
• Skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance
• Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations
• Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations
• Skill in general carpentry.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
