The MITRE Naval Aviation Systems Department's (N233) mission is to advance Naval Aviation solutions with urgency ensuring warfighter dominance against current and future adversaries in defense of our nation. This is accomplished by delivering timely, effective, and sustainable capabilities to ensure the warfighter's mission success and safe return home.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Naval Aviation department is seeking a Communications Engineer in the Lexington Park, MD area. Candidate will work across research, development, and integration of communications systems for Naval aircraft. Candidate should have a working knowledge of communication system design and be able to apply that knowledge to perform analysis and solve problems. Additionally, candidate will be responsible to perform the following:
Engage with stakeholders to analyze operational requirements, address communications network challenges, apply sound technology solutions, and advance the state of communications and networking to benefit the sponsor's mission.
Independent reviews of communications system designs and their integration into naval aircraft including analysis of alternatives, design reviews, and performance estimation
Developing and evaluating the link performance of satellite communications systems and tactical datalinks integrated on Naval aircraft
Model and analyze communication system performance contested environments and operationally relevant mission scenarios
System engineering and testing including requirements development, analysis & traceability, and requirements management
Writing technical reports and/or presenting briefings of analysis, findings, and recommendations to Government sponsors
Work in collaboration with other engineers in a team environment to support communications systems development, analysis, and testing
Basic Qualifications:
Typically, Bachelor's degree in Electrical or similar Engineering/STEM field with 8 years of related experience; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or PhD with 3 years relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step
Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret/SCI
Understanding of communications theory, link budgets, and communications and networking protocols
Experience with C++, Python, MATLAB, or other modeling and analysis tools
Interest in solving problems across multiple engineering disciplines to provide solutions to complex problems
Flexible systems thinker with the ability to quickly deliver results and achieve impactful outcomes
Effective communication skills, collaboration, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills
Experience working collaboratively in a team environment
Good communication skills and ability to present highly technical material to a diverse audience
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline with 6 years of experience
Strong systems engineering skills and familiarity with independent Verification & Validation (V&V) testing
RF communications theory including:
Modulation types
Error correction coding
Channel effects
Communications protocols
Antenna performance modeling
Digital Signal Processing
Software Defined Radios
Military & Commercial Satellite Systems
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) experience
Digital signal processing, detection and estimation theory, and information theory
