Job Summary:
Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care for all age patients in the ambulatory surgery center. Provides care within nursing standards of practice and the policies of the Center. Makes decisions regarding direct patient care needs and communicates appropriate information to physicians, patients, family members, and personnel in other departments as well as team members. May have additional responsibilities as designated by the Clinical Nurse Manager and/or Director of Nursing, which include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, participating in quality improvement audits and projects.
Candidate will possess outstanding multi-tasking abilities, communication and teamwork as well as the ability to keep up in a fast-paced working environment.
Duties Include:
- Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
- Performs patient assessment immediately upon admission and on a regular basis in accordance with standards of care with documentation of these assessments as a basis for planning each patient’s care.
- Ensures that all nursing interventions and patients’ responses are communicated to responsible practitioners as indicated and that all components of the nursing process are documented in accordance with standards of practice.
- Develop an individualized perioperative plan of care.
- Implement the plan of care using the following interventions:
o Communicate patient’s status throughout the continuum of care.
o Administer medication(s) appropriately.
o Perform interventions to protect patient from infection.
o Perform interventions necessary to ensure patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.
o Manage patient’s specimen(s) in the appropriate manner.
o Assess knowledge level of patient or designated support person and provide education regarding the expected psychosocial response, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
o Actively involve patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process.
o Protect patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.
o Provide culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
o Provide consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
o Protect patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects.
o Perform count procedures to protect patient from unintended retained foreign objects.
o Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
· Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes and discharge criteria.
· Transfer care as appropriate.
· Delegate tasks as appropriate according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.
· Document nursing care appropriately and timely.
· Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
· Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
· Participate in the performance appraisal process.
· Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
· Maintain required competencies.
· Attend required meetings and educational sessions.
- Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy of all appropriate information.
Required Skills:· Graduate of an approved school of nursing
· Current license as an RN in the State of Maryland
· Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
· Current certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) for “home” ASC locations where pediatric patients are served
· One year of Ambulatory Surgical Center or Hospital setting preferred.
· Proficient skills in Microsoft Office products including Excel
· Ability, knowledge, skills of a Staff Nurse who can function in all areas of the ASC.
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
· Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in complex situations.
· Ability to understand the need for confidentiality in the work assigned.
· Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos (in English)
· Ability to prepare reports and keep records.
· Skills to maintain effective communication with patients, physicians and ASC staff
