JOB SUMMARY
The Crisis Counselor provides clinical assessment/problem identification, recommendations, and referral services to individuals with acute, severe or chronic problems related to emotional mental crisis or substance abuse for Behavioral Health Services at Campbell County Health. The Crisis Counselor Assists in clients' treatment while admitted to the inpatient psych unit to include individual/group therapy and working as a member of the treatment team. Must be licensed or provisionally licensed and requires a Master’s degree in a mental health field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Evaluates and assesses individuals with acute/severe problems related to substance abuse, mental or emotional problems; clients may be suicidal, depressed, psychotic and/or potentially violent.
- Develops and implements specialized individual plans for clients to assist in identifying, minimizing or resolving problems and to ensure safety.
- Counsels and advises individuals, in person, virtually and by telephone, who are experiencing acute emotional or mental crisis.
- Evaluates clients placed on 72-hour hold and makes recommendations to the medical staff regarding release or detainment.
- Makes client referrals to community agencies; determines whether individuals meet involuntary detention standards; may place clients on 72-hour hold per county regulations
- Consults with mental health and other medical professionals, supervisors, and other staff regarding the status and disposition of clients.
- Works with client's family to assist them in understanding and dealing with the client's problems.
- Monitors individual behavior and progress to ensure the disposition and referrals are appropriate; reports and documents observations of client behavior and progress.
- Is actively engaged in the department, solves problems, participates in strategic planning, and contributes positively to workplace moral.
- Serves as the dedicated crisis clinician during business hours, and participates on the BHS 24/7 on call crisis counselor schedule
- Transports clients as appropriate per CCH BHS transportation and mobile crisis policies
- Works positively and collaboratively with courts, law enforcement, physicians, hospital staff, Department of Family Services, Probation Offices, Campbell County School District and other community agencies as applicable.
- Maintains clinical documentation in a manner as required by department policy, the Standards for the Operation of Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Programs, and the Medicaid Policies and Procedures Manual, and in accordance, as applicable with SAMHSA TIPS and TAPS.
- Maintains competence in multicultural issues and demonstrates respect and understanding for people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Adheres to established policies and procedures for Behavioral Health services, Kid Clinic and Campbell County Memorial Hospital.
- Actively engages in departmental quality assurance and utilization management activities and processes to include monthly chart reviews.
- Provides services to patients on the CCH Psychiatric unit such as individual/group therapy and is an active member on the treatment team
- Maintains professional licensure through required educational and training experiences.
- Participates in activities to promote mental health and/or the prevention of substance abuse.
- Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.
- Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Education
- A master’s degree in a mental health discipline or related field is required.
- Licensure
- Licensed or license eligible as a licensed mental health professional is required.
- If not licensed at the time of hire, must obtain licensure or provisional licensure within one month of date of hire.
- Licensed professionals must strictly adhere to the ethical code of their respective discipline.
