The Strategic Management Society (SMS), an international association providing services to those in the strategic management field, is looking for a Senior Manager of Publications & Foundation. This is a senior level position that drives the strategic direction of core program areas within the organization. The SMS is a small but mighty team that relies on extensive cross-functional collaboration and the support of a network of uniquely dedicated volunteers. In this position, you will work under the direction of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the SMS Journal co-editors, staff members, the Board of Directors, and the SMS Journal publisher to evolve content strategy and advance the organization. A significant portion of the job responsibilities relate to managing the Society’s three journals, Strategic Management Journal (SMJ), Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ), and Global Strategy Journal (GSJ) and being the primary SMS liaison between the editorial teams and the publisher while also connecting this content to a larger audience.
Additionally, this position manages the activities of the Society’s awards programs and the Strategy Research Foundation.
Key Responsibilities:
Publications:
· Serve as the main point of contact and primary liaison with the publisher and journal editors regarding journal management, awards, and other major journal initiatives. Communicate relevant journal developments to the Executive Director, staff, and Publications Committee.
· Ensure cohesion across SMS’s scholarly publishing program and other SMS member services, such as the SMS website, workshops, and both virtual and live conferences.
· Assist with journal promotion efforts and support approaches to publicizing SMS scholarship.
· Support the development of content strategies to connect SMS scholarship with business practitioners and consultants. Grow awareness of the organization and its cutting-edge research. Manage the SMS Explorer, the society’s business focused newsletter and website content.
· Serve as the staff liaison to the SMS Board of Directors Publications Committee (and other ad hoc committees), including preparing materials and reports, and developing meeting agendas.
· Provide writing, copyediting, and related support for SMS publications, emails, newsletters, and other materials; develop and manage press kit and write and distribute press releases. Select articles and work with freelance writers to prepare SMS Explorer posts and a monthly newsletter.
· Networking and representation of SMS within external journal-focused and society associations and interest in developing external connections with like-minded peers in an effort to continually focus on and learn new solutions and stay abreast of developments in the academic publishing industry.

Strategy Research Foundation:
· Manage the support of the Strategy Research Foundation (SRF) including current programs and the development of new programs that align with the mission of the Foundation.
· Support SRF Program Co-Chairs and Program Directors in the grant selection process, including development and communication of the calls for proposals, facilitating the review process, and communications with applicants.
· Oversee the entire grant lifecycle, including monitoring and tracking grant progress, deadlines, deliverables, and communications with grant recipients. Ensure compliance with grant agreements and reporting requirements.
· Participate in the evaluation of grant programs, collecting and analyzing data to measure impact and success.
· Coordinate and promote events for the Foundation in order to build program/cohort identity and networking opportunities.
· Support the marketing and promotion of grant funding programs to educate and raise awareness of programs and promote applications.
· Create and disseminate content to celebrate research enabled and supported by SMS grants and the SRF.
· Serve as the staff liaison to the SMS Board of Directors Research Committee including preparing materials and reports, and developing meeting agendas
Awards
· Oversee the SMS Awards Program, including the nominations, review and selection of recipients, award recognitions and communications.
· Serve as the primary staff liaison with the SMS Board of Directors Awards Committee, including preparing materials and reports and developing meeting agendas
Operations
· Contribute to the ongoing operations and technology evolution of the organization.
· Manage the disbursement of award and grant funds.
· Participate in annual budgeting and monthly financial reporting and develop analyses, projections, and forecasts as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Excellent organizational, project management, and analytical thinking skills; Highly detail oriented.
· Superior editing, proofreading, and writing skills.
· A strategic mindset and the ability to proactively drive innovative ideas and process improvement
· Experience managing and supporting a network of senior-level volunteer stakeholders.
· Experience in grant management and compliance.
· Demonstrated ability to communicate and articulate complex ideas in writing and verbally to various audiences.
· Knowledge, understanding, and experience in publishing (particularly academic journal publishing preferred)
· Experience with Salesforce and submission/peer review systems, such as ScholarOne and/or Submittable, preferred.
· Ability to recognize and manage confidential and potentially sensitive information with discretion.
· Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects at once and resolve problems independently.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree and 5 years’ experience working in or with associations; preferably in organizations with connections to peer-reviewed journals.
· Ability to travel domestically and internationally 2-4 times per year.
The SMS is based in downtown Chicago, IL. While we offer flexible work arrangements, the ability to come to the office a minimum of two days per week is currently required. No relocation is provided for this position.
