Automation Engineer
The Automation Engineer is responsible for performing the below described duties and responsibilities in the course of full-scale implementation of automated control systems including but not limited to process control systems, factory automation, water and wastewater SCADA systems, and other digital control systems. Reports To: Department Manager
Essential Responsibilities: - Planning, organizing, and designing and implementation of engineering and other disciplines contributing to the project execution, ensuring standards compliance and quality outcomes.
- Identify critical technical roadblocks and risks, while providing the resources to navigate through situations.
- Directly manage the project engineering process and the implementation of objectives and overall activities to facilitate standardization of design, execution strategy/methods, and support approaches.
- Assist in quantifying resources for specific project engagements as required and prepare corresponding statement of work as necessary.
- Design and implement cellular and RF communication networks for SCADA systems and RTUs.
- Design and create software point/tag databases for automation system projects.
- Coordinate with graphics team and customer to produce the required graphic screens as required.
- Develop and deploy PLC based and other digital controller programs for automated control and data collection.
- Develop HMI (Human Machine Interface) applications.
- Design control system circuits as required to perform the required automatic control sequences, safety functions and general operational requirements.
- Specify hardware components as necessary for new or existing designs to meet the specified requirements.
- Create and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and O&M Manuals as needed.
- Assist with the training and indoctrination of newly hired Automation Engineers and technicians.
- Process documentation to comply with internal documentation requirements.
Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology or equivalent experience.
- Five or more years of experience in engineering, development, or related roles.
- Ability to lead technical teams on medium to large, complex projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High level of organizational and time management skills, excellent attention to detail
- 8 years' experience with a variety of automation hardware including but not limited to PLCs, Direct Digital Controllers, and/or Distributed Control Systems.
- 8 years' experience with commercial SCADA, or Building Automation software including HMI software.
- Specific experience with Allen-Bradley and Modicon PLCs is a plus.
- Specific experience and/or certification with Ignition or VTScada software is a plus.
- Intermediate knowledge of general IT and networking/networks and server operation systems.

Travel May require occasional or extended travel out-of-town based on project need.
Supervisory Received Under general direction, working from policies and general objectives with little functional guidance. Rarely refer specific cases to superior unless clarification or interpretation of company policies is involved.
Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Errors Probable errors would be difficult to detect such as the recommendation of unsuitable equipment of facilities resulting in excessive costs or inadequate production over an extended period. May have adverse effect on outside relationships. Work not subject to audit or check, involving considerable accuracy and responsibility.
Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to management.
Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of PLC, HMI, and SCADA programming software; Dorsett Controls InfoScan programming software; AutoCAD software; SQL Database software; Excel Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
