Position Summary:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel handles the preparation and enforcement of certain City codes and ordinances and provides legal advice and assistance to City departments and officials. The Assistant Corporation Counsel is responsible for the prosecution of code and ordinance violations, disciplinary hearings, licensing issues, certain collections cases and other related matters.

Education:
The minimum educational requirements for this position are:
- Must be fully qualified and licensed Attorney under State of Illinois law.
Experience:
Candidates for this position must possess the following experience, or experience deemed to be equivalent to the following:
- Two years of legal experience in representing a municipality, including code enforcement, preferred.
- Working knowledge of Federal and State law pertaining to code enforcement and
housing management.
- Prior experience negotiating and closing real estate acquisitions and sales and with eminent domain

- Employee must have excellent legal research and composition skills.
- Employee must have strong legal analytical skills.
- Employee must have strong legal document drafting skills.
- Employee must have computer skills including word processing, and database and spreadsheet creation and management.
- Employee must be proficient in the use of WestLaw’s legal data base.
- Employee must have basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division, percentages, interest and similar concepts.
- Employee must be able to communicate effectively.
- Employee must be able to organize and prioritize extensive workload.
- Must have extensive knowledge of court system and how to handle enforcement of city codes, ordinances and other legal disputes through the court system.
Required Licenses:
The person holding this position must have the following licenses or be able to obtain the same within 30 days of their start date:
- Must be licensed Attorney under Illinois law.
- Illinois Class D Vehicle Operators License
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Handles enforcement procedures through the Courts relative to city codes and ordinance violations.
- Handles small claims collection matters in Circuit Courts.
- Coordinates activities regarding the demolition of structures.
- Train and prepare code enforcement staff on case preparation and court hearings.
- Works within the Legal Department in a way to promote quality legal services to the City.
- Works closely with city department heads, inspectors and others involved in code and ordinance enforcement and real estate matters, including having regular meetings to discuss cases and issues.
- May advise Department Heads or City staff on legal issues.
- Assists with the preparation of city codes, ordinances and resolutions for presentation to the City Council or appropriate oversight committees.
Residency Requirements:
Employees and Officers of the City of Danville must establish their principal residence in Illinois, within forty-five miles of the corporate limits of the City of Danville within six (6) months following successful completion of their probationary period.
