Position Summary:
Transports adult and pediatric patients, assists setting up orthopedic equipment, receives and puts away storeroom supplies. Performs errands as directed by Nursing personnel. Assists with room turnover in the O.R. Retrieves blood and blood products. Delivers specimens to the laboratory.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
1. Transports adult and pediatric patients to the O.R. and post-operatively as requested.
- Greets patients in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner and verifies patient ID using two identifiers, (MR # & complete patient name, as printed on patient armband), asks patient's name, checks against transportation request slip & patient's chart.
- Ensures that stretcher wheels are locked prior to transferring patient. Transports patient feet first, with chart to indicated area of O.R. A nurse will be in attendance for monitored patients.
- Never leaves patient alone and ensures that side rails are up.
- Follows directive of patient care nurse as to transport needs (i.e. monitor, O2, etc). No patient equipment will be handled or disconnected by transporter
- Transfers patient to pre-op holding and advises peri-operative nurse promptly upon arrival of patient to O.R.
2. Assists with Surgical Services room turnover.
- Responds to radio promptly.
- Assists with efficient room turnover; moving and wiping lights, furniture; cleaning equipment; bagging linen and trash promptly; as directed.
- Sets up cleaning equipment, including taski carts, and disinfectant solutions as requested.
- Places equipment to include gas cylinders, arthroscopy carts, and fracture tables in the appropriate O.R.s as directed.
- Assists with positioning patients and holding limbs in a prompt and efficient manner at the beginning and end of the surgical procedure.
- Assists with equipment decontamination tasks as requested.
3. Restocks department throughout the day.
- Monitors and replenishes O.R. linen supply throughout the day.
- Monitors and restocks scrub sinks with brushes, soap, and masks throughout the day.
- Monitors cap and bootie supplies and replenishes as necessary.
- Assists with supply distribution as directed by the O.R. Unit Coordinator.
- Monitors and restocks saline and H2O to rooms and warmers, assuring that all are appropriately dated. Discards all outdated fluids in warmer.
- Monitors par levels of storeroom issues and follows specific order days, assuring appropriate supply delivery.
4. Performs errands as directed.
- Retrieves blood products from the Blood Bank as directed, following hospital policy and procedure.
- Transports Lab/ Imaging specimens to Lab and Imaging as directed.
- Returns medication cart/ box to Pharmacy after it has been locked by the RN.
5. Performs miscellaneous Surgical Service department tasks as directed by supervising staff.
- Is available for evening, night, and weekend/holiday standby call as assigned and responds immediately to all pages, per facility policy and procedure.
6. Manages equipment and furniture placement, distribution, and processing between cases in the O.R.
- Monitors supply of, cleans and ensures ready, available stretchers throughout the day.
- Maintains equipment storage areas in a neat and organized manner at all times.
- Discards sharp boxes in accordance with hospitalwide policy and procedure.
7. Follows Infection Control procedures at all times.
Clinical Personnel
- Strictly adheres to Standard Precautions by adhering to the usage of personal protective equipment when handling blood or body fluids.
- Washes hands and other skin surfaces with soap and water thoroughly and immediately if contaminated with blood or other body fluids and before and after patient contact.
- Dispose of sharps in puncture resistant needle boxes.
- All healthcare workers who participate in invasive procedures must routinely use appropriate barrier precautions. Wears gloves, goggles, and surgical masks for all invasive procedures.
- All specimens of blood and body fluids should be put in a well-constructed container with a secure lid to prevent leaking during transport. Specimen containers should be placed in biohazardous coded plastic bag for transport.
- Adheres to isolation procedures and techniques at all times as applicable.
8. Responsible for complying with all policies and procedures that pertain to HIPAA including the minimum necessary requirements for this job position.
- As part of the requirements for this position, the employee has limited access to the medical record for the purpose of identifying patient for transport.
9. Performs and fulfills all HICS (hospital incident command system) responsibilities, assignments, tasks, and roles as directed and needed by the facility in times of emergency and/or disaster. Responsible for knowing the Hospital's emergency codes, including the purpose and appropriate action for each, and adheres to the Hospital policies and procedures for each emergency code.) Accepts/participates on assigned Team for Hurricane response.

EDUCATION:
Minimum: High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred: CNA, EMT, Nursing Student
EXPERIENCE:
Previous Operating Room experience preferred.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
BLS Certification
