- Location: SSM Health - Good Samaritan in Mt. Vernon, Illinois with two days spent at St. Mary's in Centralia, Illinois.
Job Summary:Under general direction, is responsible for planning, coordinating, and technical issues in the area of expertise. Efficiently performs cytology duties, ThinPrep screening (GYN-automated assisted PAP screening, Non-GYN, stat reads and FNA), special cytological preparations and evaluates specimens from different anatomic sites for interpretation utilizing appropriate criteria for both immediate and same day microscopic examination. Cytology or Cytopathology is diagnosing diseases by looking at single cells and small clusters of cells under a microscope.
Job Responsibilities and Requirements: PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs microscopic examination of cellular specimens to recognize, identify and screen for evidence of morphologic changes. Analyzes and classifies cellular constituents in accordance with established criteria.
- Identifies questionable cellular configuration and reviews the patient clinical history to establish preliminary interpretation of abnormal morphological features based upon cellular evidence in conjunction with pertinent cognitive knowledge; reports findings and presents specimen to supervisor and/or pathologist for evaluative diagnosis.
- Prepares final reports of gynecological cytology specimens which have been classified as normal or without evidence of cellular abnormalities & presents abnormal gynecological as well as all non-gynecological specimens, including fine needle aspirations to the pathologists for evaluative diagnosis.
- Performs cytopreparatory techniques and staining-/ cover slipping procedures ensuring that established techniques are utilized; labels specimens and conforms to the standards of the departmental quality control program. Assures that adequate department supply levels are maintained in a cost effective manner.
- Analyzes and records data. Enters and retrieves information using the laboratory information system(s) where required.
- Assists supervisor with the training and orientation of new employees and medical staff. Performs staff competencies and technical assessments.
- Develops new procedures and techniques as requested. Maintains a procedures manual and reviews and revises it as needed. Keeps abreast of changing techniques, procedures, interpretive findings associated with cytology through participation in continuing education.
- May complete High Complexity Testing as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489. Performs calibration and troubleshooting on test systems and instruments. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures according to established protocol.
- Performs administrative and clerical duties such as answering the phone, filing and registering patients.
- Assists in the proficiency testing program in the lab.
- Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience and education
EXPERIENCE
- Three years' technical experience in a laboratory setting
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
- Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
- Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
- Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
- Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
- Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
- Rare climbing.
