The Mechanical Engineering team leads the design, development and production of mechanical hardware at Raytheon. We use state-of the-art tools, processes, technology, and Six Sigma principles. Mechanical Engineering’s capabilities encompass a broad range of technical disciplines which include engineering, manufacturing, technical services, materials, processes, analysis, test and documentation.
The Precision Control Actuation Systems (PCAS) department is part of Mechanical Engineering and we are an engineering organization of approximately 185 people who are located in Tucson, AZ and Hunstville, AL. We develop new Control Actuation Systems (CAS) including Aerodynamic Tail Fin and Canard Steering Control Sections, Thrust Vector, Attitude and Divert Control Systems, Control Surface and Wing Deployment mechanisms, Stage Separation and Nosecone Ejection Systems, and more.
Job Summary:
The PCAS department is seeking a motivated Engineering Section Leader with experience in CAS hardware development for our Tucson, AZ facility. We are in need of an execution section lead to provide frontline leadership activities for approximately 15 multi-disciplinary engineers in developing new Control Actuation Systems (CAS). Members of the execution section provide technical and programmatic oversight of assigned CAS development programs. The position will drive development execution excellence on CAS programs and is responsible for the typical Integrated Product Team functions including planning, execution, CAM, reporting, resource management, technical team management and closely works with the program chief engineer and program manager, supply chain, suppliers, operations, quality and working across the engineering functional discipline spectrum. Responsibilities also include coordinating program staffing needs and reductions, coaching and mentoring team members, managing program budgets and schedule, and executing world class risk management.
The execution section lead will be called upon to provide proposal support including cost ROMs, formal Basis of Estimates, project plans and technology maturity plans. The section leader will also engage senior management and senior technical leaders on a variety of topics and must possess superior organizational, presentation and tactical execution skills as well as being able to communicate effectively and confidently demonstrating sound emotional intelligence.
This person will supervise a team of up to 15 diverse individuals working closely with section members on their performance and career development goals. The manager will also be responsible for managing and maintaining section capabilities as well as ensuring programs are adequately staffed. Management duties include performance development and appraisal, salary planning, manpower planning, career coaching, and ensuring adherence to company policies. Candidates will contribute to the technical oversight of employees, monitor program execution, and provide technical expertise in direct support of program efforts and proposal activities. The candidate will ensure two-way communication for section members; serve as the day-to-day liaison to the programs concerning employee job assignments, performance impact and recognition.
An advanced degree can be substituted for additional years of experience as follows: Master’s is equal to 2 years of experience, or a Ph.D. is equal to 4 years of experience.
Additional Responsibilities to Anticipate:
Serving as the day-to-day liaison between section members and the programs they support across all program phases
Creatively applying mechanical engineering knowledge to efficiently solve complex design problems and make sound and rationale data oriented technical conclusions.
Qualities You Must Have:
Education: B.S in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Math, or related science degree
Typically requires: A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years experience
Prior leadership roles (frontline or project leader)
Ten (10) or more years of overall engineering experience in systems, electrical or mechanical design, preferably in the development of Control Actuation Systems in all development phases.
Experience in being an advocate for process improvement (eg CMMI, R6S), a team builder, and able to build strong relationships and effectively partner with internal resources.
The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

The salary range for this role is 118,000 USD - 246,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
