The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) reports to the Lab Manager and processes and tests all types of laboratory specimens; reviews and reports lab results; performs operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment; acts as resource as needed. Specific responsibilities include:
Responsibilities
Responsible for performing moderate and high-complexity testing.
Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.
Notifies nursing unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
Meets current documentation standards and policies.
Interacts professionally with the Laboratory Manager, President and medical staff.
Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
Follows standard precautions at all times.
Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, CAP, JCAHO, state and other regulatory requirements.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Qualifications
Associates degree or equivalent experience; graduate of accredited school of medical laboratory technician.
Registered in accordance with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT or CSMLS). Equivalency evaluation by NACES or AICE for non-US trained personnel must be completed within 30 days of hire. Licensure, as required by the state.
2+ years as a medical laboratory technician.
