COMPANY
The Company is a dynamic and versatile commercial real estate developer and investor dedicated to pursuing opportunities across various product types and strategies while also providing property management services for retail and office projects. As an integral part of the company’s executive team, the Vice President of Accounting & Finance is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the organization’s accounting and finance practices from a corporate, asset management and property management perspective. The Vice President of Accounting & Finance will be an adviser to partners, clients, investors and other members of the executive team. In addition, the successful candidate has a strong attention to detail, is highly organized and is able to move multiple projects forward while handling the day-to-day operations of the accounting department in a hands-on and collaborative manner.
POSITION
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management
- Coach, train, develop and manage an in-house accounting team, including hiring, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, and taking disciplinary action, in addition to supervising external vendors and contractors to ensure efficient, precise and timely accounting workflow.
- Collaborate closely with the directors of the Investment and Property Management departments to accomplish accounting related tasks and projects and create and improve upon accounting related policies and procedures specific to those departments.
- Serve as a key leader and stakeholder for the Accounting department in organizational priorities and strategic initiatives that support the Company’s future growth and ability to efficiently scale.
- Maintain and utilize strong working knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to accounting systems, processes, and reporting practices to lead day-to-day department operations, provide accounting policy and guidance to all areas of the business and drive process improvements in line with overall goals and strategic initiatives of the organization.
- Implement strategies to minimize corporate tax risk and obligations.
Accounting Processes
- Oversee close process and prompt and accurate issuance of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements to lenders, investors and third-party owners.
- Coordinate internal asset management reports, including NAV calculations and financial model updates.
- Guarantee compliance of property financial reporting and transactions with pertinent accounting standards.
- Serve as the principal point of contact for property accounting inquiries.
- Review monthly financial data from third-party joint ventures.
- Assist in the preparation of closing statements for property acquisitions or dispositions.
- Monitor construction budgets and draw process for multiple projects.
Treasury Management
- Monitor working capital and cash flow trends on both a corporate and property level.
- Manage AP/AR activities, focusing on automation and error reduction.
- Oversee cash management and banking activities for the company and various properties.
- Control cost structures and advise on cash management risks.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with financial covenants in loan and partnership documents.
- Manage preparation and reporting of quarterly and annual tax provisions and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements.
- Assist with corporate and property-related insurance programs.
- Ensure the timely preparation, review, and submission of all property-related tax work to third-party tax preparers.
- Ensure efficient execution of multiple annual external audits.
- Monitor and administer multiple loans with various lenders to ensure compliance and minimize risk of default.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Lead annual budgeting and reforecasting processes for the company and various real property assets.
- Perform ad hoc financial analyses.
- Provide cash flow analyses for project capitalization.
- Administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain and correct variances as appropriate.
Policy & Process Improvement
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective and efficient system of internal controls including making provisions for appropriate computer application systems necessary to maintain proper records.
- Ensure appropriate segregation of duties are applied to facilitate strong internal control environment that is designed to prevent and detect material misstatements whether due to fraud or error.
- Contribute to the formulation of robust policies and procedures to safeguard the integrity of general ledgers and financial statements.
- Evaluate procedures and propose solutions to enhance operational efficiencies.
- Lead and support initiatives to optimize MRI utilization and streamline processes through automation.
- Support senior leadership in the implementation of the Company’s technology roadmap, including a Property Leasing & Management System and a cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting; advanced degree desirable.
- Licensed CPA required.
- At least ten (10) years of accounting experience.
- Significant experience in real estate management, property management and development.
- Successful track record of establishing and implementing accounting policies, procedures and systems in a ground-up environment preferred.
- High attention to detail with precise and consistent results.
- Proactively identifies potential issues and risks and resolves the same without prompting.
- Experience in rapid growth environments.
- Stringent record-keeping.
- Superb communication skills, both written and verbal, with a customer-service minded attitude.
- High level of experience in MS Office Suite, MRI software, and Yardi.
- Proven track record in financial reporting and adeptness in account ledger reconciliation.
- Experience in handling consolidation, intercompany transactions, and eliminations.
