We are hiring an Executive Claims Specialist who will be responsible for all facets of handling certain North American claims of significant complexity and exposure, involving a range of European and North American insured clients; HDI has a large book of industrial casualty risks produced internationally with claims exposure here in North America, typically involving a high proportion of product liability losses.
Responsibilities
- The investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and resolution of complex commercial casualty claims, with the assistance of external service providers where appropriate.
- In complex claims, represent the company and clients effectively by participating in or leading litigation teams where necessary.
- Independently resolve significant exposure claims on favorable terms.
- Effectively control the use, costs and work product of outside counsel and other external service providers.
- Analysis of policy coverages on variety of standard and manuscript forms, identifying and evaluating coverage issues, and where appropriate preparing written coverage positions.
- Operate within designated monetary authority for reserving, case disposition, and payments.
- Prepare timely and accurate reports for management on large losses; keep management informed of key developments on severe claims.
- Regular mediation or informal negotiation of claims.
- Provides outstanding service and availability to business partners, developing relationships with our customers, brokers and HDI colleagues, domestically and abroad.
- Collaborate constructively with co-insurers.
- Preparation of reinsurance loss reports.
- Present internally on US legal topics of interest.
- Participate in industry groups and professional societies to enhance company profile.
- Exercise authority in settings that can meaningfully impact company financial results.
- Identify and initiate subrogation recovery opportunities.
- Contribute to specialized internal working groups on emerging risks, coverage, and in MCU (major new claim evaluation team).
- Occasional travel, for mediation, client/case meetings, court or arbitral appearances, whenever necessary.
Requirements

Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree
- Obtain and maintain state insurance adjuster licenses as necessary.
- 10+ years casualty claims experience and/or commensurate background in private practice as attorney.
- The ability to travel as necessary, up to roughly 10%.
Preferred Skills & experience
- Claims experience ideally with international partners.
- European language skills (particularly German) and other cross-cultural experience.
- CPCU, AIC/AIC-M
