Our client, a power generation company based in Santa Barbara, CA is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join their team. In this role, you will design, implement, and test electric power generation and propulsion systems, specifying software, electrical, and mechanical interfaces, and working with multidisciplinary teams to optimize motor/generator controllers.
The salary for role is $135k - $165k dependent on skills and experience. Our client is also offering medical, dental and vision as well as PTO. Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be U.S. citizens or Green Card holders.
Key Responsibilities
- Derive comprehensive system requirements for electric machines from customer-provided information, breaking down multidisciplinary requirements into appropriate subsystems.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional program team to lead the design and development of electric machines from initial concept through to production.
- Guide system design decisions by conducting trade studies, performance analyses, risk assessments, requirements allocation, and developing testing strategies and verification methods.
- Prepare and maintain detailed specifications, architectural designs, and test plans and procedures, ensuring thorough documentation throughout the development process.
- Lead and participate in customer reviews, presenting progress updates and addressing concerns while gathering insights on market needs, product limitations, competitor offerings, and warranty issues.
- Act as a subject-matter expert for colleagues and customers, advocating for best practices, industry standards, and safety regulations related to electric machines and controllers.
- Provide Product Management and relevant internal teams with insights on market requirements, product shortcomings, competitive analysis, warranty issues, and other pertinent information obtained through customer interactions.
- Identify, advocate for, and implement internal research and development initiatives to drive innovation and maintain a competitive advantage.
- Assist in estimating resources and timelines required for the design, development, and implementation of hardware and software for electric machines, ensuring alignment with project schedules.
Skills & Experience
- Bachelors or Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of relevant commercial experience. Industry experience in Aerospace or Defense would be advantageous.
- Strong working knowledge of electric machine and motor/generator controller design, applications, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in the usage, application, and design of electronic and embedded control systems, including control system components.
- Familiarity with PCB layout and design with working knowledge of SOLIDWORKS CAD design tools.
- Ability to create comprehensive requirements documentation in written, verbal, diagrammatic, and schedule formats.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink is advantageous.
- Expertise in architecting, designing, writing, and maintaining C/C++ code.
- Experience with thermal design considerations and electronics packaging.
