Job Description
Attorney will be assigned to the Claims and Litigation Division of the Office of Legal Affairs. The chosen candidate will be an integral part of a team of claims attorneys who manage medical malpractice claims filed against the largest municipal health care system in the country. Responsibilities may include serving as claims counsel to several H+H facilities and management of Division’s vendor contracts and Captive Insurance Program.
General tasks and responsibilities will include:
General tasks and responsibilities include direct management and oversight of outside counsel medical malpractice defense firms, collaborating with Third-Party Administrator providing claims management services, developing appropriate defense strategies, recommending medical experts, setting indemnity reserves, assessing exposure of claims, and guiding claims towards appropriate resolutions. The claims counsel role also includes reviewing and auditing outside counsel billing, approving case management reports and coordinating claims presentations to senior management.
Additional duties may include identifying claim patterns, collaborating with senior staff and management on risk management and quality assurance issues, as well as making recommendations for loss control and mitigation of risk. This is a senior position that may require training and supervising other members of the claims and litigation team.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree or equivalent, and LLB or JD from an accredited School of Law; and admission to New York State Bar; and
2. Three (3) years of experience and background in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar in matters of litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, labor law and employee relations, or
3. Two (2) years of experience and background in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar in matters of litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, employment law and employee relations, with two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a professional or managerial capacity in respective fields applicable to the general body of law, specialties or practice.
