Recognizing that the implementation of building certifications such as LEED, WELL, Envision and the Living Building Challenge has become more common in all Skanska’s markets and across sectors, this person is a member of our Sustainability team and integral to our mission to deliver the most sustainable projects for our clients. The Senior Sustainability Manager will work alongside project teams, at either a market or multi-market level, with the pursuit of certification goals to assure they are properly tracking and documenting project sustainability goals towards eventual certification-based efforts, with business development and pursuit assistance as needed, and as a culture and initiative leader. They will assist employees and any interests they have in professional accreditation across various rating systems. They will also assist the market(s) they support in their community involvement and investment goals.
What You’ll Do:
- Be a resource to US Building’s project teams who are launching a certified project to help the team understand their obligations toward certification and provide ongoing support and consulting to ensure the work of the project team is successful.
- Help teams with credit interpretation and feasibility during the early planning and start-up phases of the work.
- Provide and maintain tracking and documentation tools and strategies for credits for which Skanska is responsible.
- Provide access to accreditation exam prep resources.
- Support overall sustainable business strategy with cost, technical, business development and advocacy assistance, as needed.
- Prepare sustainability materials for monthly LEED and/or Owner Architect Contractor meetings;
- Benchmark construction-related carbon emissions on projects;
- Create and maintain forms, templates and procedures for green building certifications to help projects meet their green goals;
- Track goals and documentation for submittal to green certification bodies;
- Benchmark and track projects’ green performance for internal corporate reporting on construction projects (water, energy, carbon, waste, etc.);
- Set up and maintain filing system for green certification documentation;
- Scan data entry performed by others for reasonableness and quality control;
- Attend project meetings, take notes, provide guidance to teams with regard to carbon emissions benchmarking and certification;
- Create infographics and other materials for sustainability presentations;
- Create educational materials and organize trainings;
- Represent Skanska as a leader in the sustainability space;
- Research emerging technologies and new standards in the sustainability market;
- Multi-location Focus: While working under the regional Senior Vice President leading the regional directors and managers, this role will support Skanska’s core sustainability values and serve as subject matter experts in all aspects of sustainable building for their designated level of leadership/responsibility. Their geographic region will be: NJ/NY Metro.
What we’re looking for:
- Knowledge of sustainability, building science, integrated design and LEED, WELL, and LBC rating systems.
- Green building understanding (strategies and certification)- energy efficiency, water efficiency, material toxicity and sourcing.
- Carbon accounting (tracking and reporting)- embodied carbon, business unit GHG inventory.
- Construction industry green building best practices.
- Relevant market trends and analysis (e.g. circularity, NZE).
- Accreditation and experience in at least one of the following four green building certification programs: LEED, WELL, LBC, Envision.
- Preferred 5+ years of experience in sustainability consulting, construction, architecture, and/or engineering.
- Preferred experience in the areas of social equity/environmental justice, and responsible sourcing.
- Green building certification project experience- 10 projects minimum preferred.
- Skilled in team support and collaboration.
- Skilled in meeting deadlines and providing quality service, while also occasionally working autonomously.
- Experience in developing and delivering training including forms, templates, PowerPoint presentations, checklists, etc.
- Preferred experience in public speaking and business development.
- Experience with sustainability KPI data gathering, goal-setting, and facilitation.
- Experience with the organization of charitable data collection and collaborative planning.
- Experience as sustainable building industry advocate and/or committee leader/member.
- Ability to pivot and re-prioritize often as needs of internal and external stakeholders change.
