The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (www.aiaa.org) in Reston, VA seeks a Manager, Publications Acquisition and Strategy to work as a part of our Product Operations team to be responsible for the acquisition of book titles for AIAA, including author relationships.
Reporting to the Director, Publications, you will be responsible for the acquisition of book titles for AIAA, managing the committees involved with AIAA’s books program, and be the channel manager for AIAA content. In this role, you will provide support for business strategy, product development, and OA publishing initiatives.
AIAA has a Flexible Workplace, where staff work primarily remote, but are required to attend meetings in the office and collaborate in person as needed. Candidates must reside in the Washington, DC metro area.
Accountability:
- Primary point of contact for Books Subcommittee and book series Editorial Advisory Boards.
- Work with Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Advisory Boards to acquire 8 to 12 books per year (new or revised editions).
- Manage ScholarOne Books proposal submission dashboards.
- Manage all aspects of author relations, including author contract negotiations.
- Collaborate with Managing Editor to ensure that submitted manuscripts are in good order at turnover to editorial/production.
- Develop, manage and/or maintain content channels (excluding Accucoms) for AIAA publications (e.g., ebooks, journals, meeting papers, standards) with third parties.
- Develop supporting/ancillary materials and alternative product formats.
- Collaborate with publications staff to manage print and eBook inventory and fulfilment operations, to include management of fulfillment vendors/partners.
- Collaborate with publications and finance staff to monitor royalty management/payments.
- Collaborate with publications staff in preparing publications budgets on both the project and program level. Responsible for meeting annual KI, revenue targets, and ensuring ROI on books program.
- Work with Director, Publications to undertake business strategy, content management, and forecasting projects for books, journals, and Open Access publishing initiatives.
- Work with Director, Publications to support various initiatives of the Publications Committee.
Position Dimensions:
- Interface with Publications Managers, IT, other AIAA departments, and external vendors.
- Coordinate with and manage vendors on development and implementation of new or existing publication initiatives.
- Provide data from the system database for reports, analysis and monitor progress
- Support Director, Publications and all Publications staff in various facets of product development, analysis, delivery and external stakeholder support.
- Occasional travel required.
Education:
- B.A. or B.S. required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience in book development and/or acquisition required.
- Background in STEM publishing preferred.
- Strong understanding of book marketing/promotion/content channel management preferred.

- Superior project management ability, including planning, scheduling, organization, problem solving, maintaining focus, and monitoring project performance.
- Understanding of electronic information media and awareness of related technical and industry trends and issues.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.

- Ability to work in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision in a remote hybrid business environment, as well as cooperatively with teams.
- Exceptional customer-relations skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
