Position Summary
BI/Data Architect with proven experience providing BI solutions will have an immediate impact on enhancing operational and strategic data informed decision-making for the University. Through this role, this position would have the opportunity to provide insights that impact policy, practice and outcomes with the client working in a team environment to design, develop, and deliver enterprise business intelligence and analytic solutions. Minimum Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math and a minimum of 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience as a BI Developer.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
• Strong experience leading BI initiatives
• Experience designing and developing data warehouse and reporting architectures
• Experience with BI technologies, such as SSAS, MS Power BI, Tableau and other BI applications.
• Strong experience gathering requirements and designing and building solutions to meet those requirements.
• Strong experience sourcing and integrating data from disparate data sources (Cloud and on-premise relational databases, APIs, files of varying formats)
• Strong experience modeling data for both transactional and reporting systems.
• Experience using ETL or ELT to transform data into formats appropriate for reporting and analytics
• Strong experience creating reports and dashboards.
• Experience with software development best practices such as agile methodologies, source code control, prototyping, and testing.
• Experience with troubleshooting enterprise Bl systems and processes.
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
• Experience training technical and non-technical users on BI tools.
Job Duties
- Strategy, Planning & Architecture
- Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for BI development in conjunction with end users, managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Lead BI project planning process to establish business requirements, define deliverables, conduct data analysis, and establish timelines.
- Architect our client's BI implementation and define standards and best practices for development and managing security and access, and administration.
- Design the data architecture for our client's BI implementation (ie. Datasets, Data Lakehouse)
- Train and mentor BI developers. Serve as the SME for topics related to BI.
- Provide consultation, advice, and expertise to distributed BI developers and campus stakeholders regarding BI related endeavors.
- Partner with the business areas to identify, audit, and define and execute a plan for addressing data standards and data quality.
- Acquisition & Deployment
- Lead the research and development of BI products, services, and standards in support of the university to enhance institutional decision making.
- Evaluate and select business intelligence components, including hardware, relational database management systems, ETL software, metadata management tools, and database design solutions.
- Operational Management Project Management / Initiative Management
- Direct, organize, and lead projects in the implementation and use of new and existing BI solutions.
- Lead the integration efforts for merging BI platforms with enterprise systems and applications.
- Lead the data quality initiatives focused on standardizing and cleaning data needed for reporting / analytics. Requirements Gathering:
- Gather user requirements for new BI initiatives and changes to existing solutions Development:
- Design, develop, and document new or modified BI data solutions including Data Lakehouse models as well as BI tool metadata models.
- Design and develop ETL to transform source data into a format that supports BI. (This is currently done in PBI and on the move to the data lakehouse.)
- Design, develop, and document BI user facing solutions including reports, dashboards, …
- Perform statistical analysis as appropriate for BI related projects that include predictive and prescriptive analytics.
- Assist in the design of transactional data and database structures being developed by others in Enterprise Solutions to ensure modeling supports the BI needs. Data:
- Collaborate with key functional stakeholders to understand their business domain, processes, and data.
- Work with key stakeholders to address new and recurring data clean up items. Training:
- Design and deliver end-user training and training materials; provide technical support as necessary.
- Design and deliver BI developer training / mentoring (one-on-one and formal sessions) that focuses on strengthening the BI competency Support:
- Provide business hours and off-business hours support for all BI solutions. This includes support for scheduled processes, reports, dashboards.
- Provide during and after-hours support for BI system maintenance (ie. gateway upgrades) and non-BI system maintenance that impacts BI solutions (ie. Colleague, Etrieve, …)
