This position is located in the Division of Civil Law, Employment Law Section, and may be filled in Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles or San Diego. Please clearly state in your cover letter which city you prefer.
Deputies assigned to the Investigations Group within the Employment Law Section (ELS) mainly conduct investigations. The investigations conducted are both for internal clients and for a variety of other state entities throughout the State of California. The Deputies conduct a variety of types of inquiries and investigations, including management inquiries, fact-gathering, fact-finding and policy determinations (whether violated) investigations. Deputies investigate claims of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on a variety of protected characteristics. For example, claims of sexual harassment and failure to promote based on age claims. Deputies also investigate claims of misconduct, including unprofessional conduct, dishonesty, misuse of state funds, and whistleblower retaliation, among others. The Investigations Group is headquartered in Sacramento, but Deputies can choose to work from Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles or San Diego.
In addition, Deputies will, at times, be tasked with assisting the larger group of ELS attorneys who predominately handle employment litigation defense and may be transferred to the larger group. ELS has approximately 100 attorneys and paralegals practicing in offices throughout California. ELS's litigation practice regularly involves jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and appellate arguments in state and federal courts. ELS provides representation to state agencies in connection with lawsuits alleging claims of discrimination, harassment and whistleblower retaliation, among others. In addition to employment law, ELS represents such clients as the California Highway Patrol, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the State Lottery Commission, and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in a wide variety of legal matters. ELS attorneys also prosecute disciplinary matters before the State Personnel Board.
All ELS attorneys are expected to be willing and able to handle civil litigation matters including representing clients at trial.
