Position Title: Vice President of Construction
Reports to: Chief Format Officer
Position Summary:
A large and growing organic supermarket is seeking a Vice President of Construction. This high-level executive will be responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of construction projects, from initial planning to final completion. This role requires handling multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating with both internal teams and external partners to ensure deadlines and objectives are met. The VP of Construction provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight to ensure each project meets cost, schedule, and quality goals. This position aims to drive value, cost efficiency, and effective outcomes across all construction-related spending, supporting the company’s growth.
Essential Functions:
- Budget Management: Create comprehensive budgets for each project phase and ensure adequate staffing to support project needs.
- Scheduling: Develop detailed project schedules, including milestones, durations, and dependencies for each project component.
- Progress Reporting: Provide regular updates on project status regarding schedule and budget.
- Cost Management: Oversee construction budgets, conduct estimate evaluations, and manage overall project costs.
- Project Programming and Design: Contribute to project planning, design reviews, and financial analysis.
- Preliminary Design Management: Oversee the preliminary design process and building programming.
- Communication: Set up and manage project updates for various stakeholders.
- Timeline and Feasibility: Ensure overall project timelines, schedule control, and conduct feasibility studies related to construction and implementation.
- Project Evaluation: Work closely with the development team to assess project viability before acquisition.
- Main Contact: Serve as the primary point of contact for all construction activities.
- Contract Schedule Oversight: Monitor progress against the contract construction schedule and ensure delivery of items required for future work.
- Inspections: Schedule and document necessary government inspections during construction.
- Leadership Development: Develop, coach, and mentor leaders within the construction department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- 10+ years of experience in construction with a retailer experiencing growth
- Must have current VP experience and come from a large grocer, retailer, restaurant, or commercial real estate developer
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance/Accounting, or a related field
- Proven track record in business development
- Ability to achieve and maintain financial control, profit goals, and project success
- Demonstrated project management skills in commercial construction
- Strong organizational, team development, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency with construction industry software
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Self-motivated team player willing to travel for various projects nationwide
- Understanding of internal and vendor accounting
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
Physical Requirements:
- Primarily office-based work environment
- Ability to lift and carry materials up to 20 pounds
- Operate standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and fax machines, with continuous arm, hand, and eye movement
- Travel to meetings and project locations as needed
