Job Summary: Our client is seeking a Senior High Voltage Cable Design Engineer to join our team. This position plays a critical role in the design, analysis, and implementation of high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) underground cable systems. The successful candidate will work closely with the Engineering Manager to lead and train the HV cable engineering team, ensuring our products meet and exceed customer expectations. This role requires in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering and HV/EHV cable systems, along with the ability to work cross-functionally to optimize production and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cable System Design: Under limited direction, design comprehensive HV/EHV cable system solutions, including accessories, link boxes, fiber optic components, grounding details, and bonding schemes for voltage classes ranging from 69kV to 500kV. Utilize advanced computer programs and analytical techniques to meet project requirements and resolve issues.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Act as the subject matter expert in electro-mechanical behavior of HV/EHV cable systems, supporting installation and field applications.
- Documentation and Process Improvement: Prepare and revise specifications, proposals, contracts, and safety documents. Work with Sales & Marketing and Project Management teams to obtain necessary approvals. Continuously seek and implement process improvements for greater efficiency.
- Manufacturing Support: Collaborate with manufacturing teams throughout the production cycle, creating testing plans, leading design handover meetings, and resolving issues on the manufacturing floor. Make recommendations to ensure smooth coordination between production, installation, and customer needs.
- Project Leadership: Serve as principal investigator or lead a team of engineers on projects, developing solutions, preparing recommendations, and producing reports. Manage Research & Development projects, including planning, forecasting timelines, managing budgets, and coordinating logistics using the “Stage Gate” process.
- Customer Interaction and Training: Represent the HV engineering group in meetings and conferences. Provide training seminars to customers and resolve technical issues. Make formal technical presentations to customers and industry forums.
- Mentorship: Train and assist junior engineers with their projects and calculations, fostering their professional development.
- Safety Promotion: Champion safety in the workplace and on project sites, adhering to Southwire’s Culture of ZERO.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience: A minimum of 10 years of experience in HV/EHV underground cable design and engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technical Expertise:
- In-depth knowledge of underground power transmission engineering, including thermal, mechanical, and electrical field calculations.
- Proficiency in industry standards such as ICEA, AEIC, IEC, and IEEE.
- Strong ability to read and analyze engineering drawings.
- Expertise in relevant software packages, including Cymcap, Comsol Multiphysics, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Matlab, PSCAD, Pull Planner, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with cable materials and testing processes.
- Proficiency in Visual Basic and similar programming languages for coding spreadsheets and macros in Microsoft Excel.
